About this session
Aircraft maintenance can place the body in demanding positions for long periods.
Engineers and technicians may work overhead, kneel or crouch, reach into restricted areas, hold tools away from the body, work around landing gear or under aircraft, climb repeatedly, and move between benches, platforms, ladders, and confined workspaces.
This session focuses specifically on ergonomics and musculoskeletal wellbeing. Participants learn how posture, reach, repetition, static positions, tool use, working height, movement variation, and recovery can influence the neck, shoulders, back, hips, knees, wrists, and hands.
The emphasis is on protecting physical health and recognizing cumulative strain — not teaching aircraft maintenance procedures, engineering technique, or safety-critical maintenance practice.
What your people take away
- Understand how overhead work, crouching, kneeling, bending, reaching, and prolonged static positions can create cumulative musculoskeletal demand
- Recognize how working height, access, reach distance, tool position, and restricted space can influence posture and physical comfort
- Understand why posture is not simply about sitting or standing straight, but about how long a position is held, how often it repeats, and how much opportunity there is to move
- Build realistic habits around position variation, movement, task recovery, general physical capacity, and early response to recurring discomfort
- Recognize early changes in comfort, strength, movement, sensation, or normal function before they become persistent
- Distinguish personal ergonomic strategies from access, equipment, platform height, tool design, workstation setup, scheduling, and other workplace factors requiring organizational attention

What’s covered
Understand How Maintenance Positions Load the Body
Every length- Posture is about exposure, not perfectionNo single posture is inherently the problem simply because it looks awkward for a moment.
- Overhead work changes upper-body loadWorking with the arms elevated or the head tilted upward can increase muscular demand through the shoulders, neck, and upper back.
- Low-level work loads the body differentlyKneeling, crouching, bending, and working below normal standing height can increase demand through the knees, hips, back, and legs.
- Reach distance mattersWorking with the hands away from the body can increase muscular effort through the shoulders, arms, and trunk even when the item being handled is relatively light.
Improve Movement, Working Height & Physical Comfort
90 minutes and longer- Working height changes postureWhen work is positioned too high, too low, or too far away, the body has to adapt around the task.
- Position variation matters more than holding one good postureEven a comfortable position can become tiring if it is maintained for too long.
- Static muscle work can be easy to missHolding a tool, supporting an arm, maintaining a crouched position, or keeping the head in one orientation may require sustained muscular effort without obvious movement.
- Access can shape the body more than the worker canRestricted spaces, fixed aircraft geometry, platforms, panels, and access points may determine where the body can realistically go.
Protect Hands, Wrists & Physical Capacity
3 hours and longer- Tool use can create repeated upper-limb demandRepeated gripping, turning, pressing, holding, and manipulating tools can accumulate through the hands, wrists, forearms, and shoulders.
- Wrist position can change with accessRestricted space or difficult tool access may require the wrist or hand to work away from a comfortable neutral range.
- Physical capacity changes through the shiftA posture or tool task that feels manageable when fresh may become more demanding after hours of standing, kneeling, reaching, or repeated hand use.
- Recovery supports longer-term toleranceMovement, sleep, general physical activity, strength, hydration, nourishment, and time away from repeated occupational demand all contribute to wider recovery.
Recognize Early Change & Strengthen Ergonomic Prevention
Full day only- Changes in comfort and function matterIncreasing pain, stiffness, numbness, weakness, reduced grip, limited movement, or difficulty performing normal activities deserve attention when they persist or worsen.
- Work context makes reporting more usefulUseful information may include the task, working height, access position, tools, duration, repetition, and where discomfort appears.
- Personal posture has limitsMovement and posture awareness can support health, but employees cannot personally change aircraft geometry, fixed access, inadequate platforms, unsuitable equipment, or persistent work-design constraints.
- Recurring patterns can guide improvementWhen similar discomfort repeatedly occurs around particular access points, tasks, tools, or working heights, those patterns may identify opportunities for wider ergonomic review.
