About this session
What happens when everyday natural ingredients are treated like materials rather than food?
Bio-Plastic Workshop is a hands-on materials lab. Small teams mix tested formulations made from natural polymers, cast samples, change one variable at a time and compare how the materials behave.
The lab ends with a reality check on when bio-based materials are genuinely useful, and what their real sustainability trade-offs are.
What your people take away
- Mix and cast experimental bio-based plastic materials
- Compare how different formulas look and perform
- Understand natural polymers and plasticizers
- Weigh the real sustainability trade-offs

- Change one variableTeams change one ingredient or amount and make a new sample.
- Test the materialUsing pre-cured samples, participants compare flexibility, surface feel, thickness and tearing.
- Record the resultsEach team keeps a formulation record.
Reality check
- When is it useful? The group discusses when a bio-based material actually makes sense.
- Trade-offsParticipants weigh sourcing, durability and end-of-life questions.
- The material tableTeams bring samples and notes together for a final comparison.
