About this session
Burnout can develop when demanding work, insufficient recovery and prolonged strain continue for too long. By the time people recognize what is happening, simply adding another wellbeing habit may not be enough.
They may feel exhausted, detached, irritable, ineffective or unable to recover properly between working days.
This session focuses on what to do when the warning signs are already significant.
Participants identify the patterns that suggest ordinary stress has become chronic depletion, assess what needs to stop, reduce or change, and build an immediate stabilization plan rather than attempting to push through at the same pace.
The session also covers workload conversations, support, boundaries and recovery. Participants learn when self-management is no longer enough and when manager, human resources, occupational health, medical or psychological support may be appropriate.
The final module focuses on rebuilding capacity gradually so recovery does not become a short pause followed by a return to the same unsustainable conditions.

- Identify what needs to stop, reduce or change immediately

What’s covered
Recognize When You Are Beyond Ordinary Stress
Every length- Look for persistent exhaustionParticipants identify whether tiredness is becoming persistent rather than resolving after ordinary rest, weekends or lighter periods.
- Notice detachment and cynicismParticipants identify whether they are becoming unusually disconnected, irritable, cynical or emotionally flat toward work that previously felt manageable.
- Recognize reduced effectivenessParticipants notice signs such as slower thinking, repeated mistakes, difficulty concentrating, procrastination or feeling unable to complete normal work with their usual effort.
- Check whether recovery is still workingParticipants assess whether sleep, breaks, time off or normal recovery activities are restoring them at all.
Stabilize and Reduce the Load
90 minutes and longer- Stop asking yourself to perform at normal capacityParticipants identify where they are continuing to expect full output despite significantly reduced capacity.
- Triage what must happenParticipants sort current responsibilities into must happen, can wait, can reduce and can move elsewhere.
- Make the workload conversation concreteParticipants practice explaining which demands are no longer sustainable, what the current impact is and what practical change would help.
- Create a temporary stabilization planParticipants identify short-term boundaries around hours, meetings, workload, availability or responsibilities that can create enough space for recovery.
Recover With the Right Support
3 hours and longer- Protect basic recovery firstParticipants identify the foundations most at risk, such as sleep opportunity, meals, movement, medical care, downtime or time away from work.
- Let recovery be lower demandParticipants identify where they are turning recovery into another project to complete perfectly and practice choosing activities that genuinely reduce demand rather than requiring achievement, tracking or improvement.
- Use support before everything gets worseParticipants map appropriate sources of support such as a manager, human resources, occupational health, employee assistance, healthcare professionals or trusted personal support and identify who can help with which part of the problem.
- Know when self-management is not enoughParticipants recognize persistent exhaustion, low mood, anxiety, sleep disruption, physical symptoms or significant difficulty functioning as reasons to seek appropriate medical, psychological or workplace support rather than relying only on self-care.
Rebuild Capacity Without Repeating the Pattern
Full day only- Return demand graduallyParticipants identify which responsibilities can return first and which should remain reduced while capacity rebuilds.
- Keep the conditions that helpedParticipants identify which workload changes, boundaries or support arrangements made recovery possible and decide which need to continue rather than automatically disappearing as soon as they begin feeling better.
- Build an early-warning planParticipants identify the first signs that depletion is returning and decide what action they will take before the pattern becomes severe.
- Change the system, not just the personParticipants examine whether workload, role design, staffing, communication or expectations contributed to burnout and identify what needs to change around the work itself.
