About this session

Teams trying to solve a difficult problem often search in the most obvious place: their own industry. They examine competitors, familiar best practice and the approaches their organization has already tried.

That can be useful, but it also keeps the search inside many of the same assumptions that created the current solution space.

Cross-Industry Solutions deliberately widens the search. Instead of asking only, 'Who else in our industry has solved this?', participants ask, 'Where else does this type of problem exist — even if the organization, customer or product looks completely different?'

A hospital managing critical handoffs may learn from aviation. A retailer trying to reduce waiting may examine theme parks or airports.

A professional-services team trying to build recurring customer relationships may examine membership businesses. A logistics operation dealing with unpredictable demand may study industries designed around rapid capacity changes.

The value lies not in copying another organization but in understanding the mechanism underneath the solution.

Participants learn to abstract the challenge, find useful analogues, deconstruct real solutions, identify the conditions that make them work and transfer only the mechanisms that fit their own context.

They then combine, modify and prototype the strongest ideas so cross-industry inspiration becomes a testable business solution rather than an interesting case study.

What your people take away

  • Reframe business challenges so useful analogies can be found outside the immediate industry
  • Search for industries that solve comparable functional problems in different ways
  • Deconstruct successful solutions to understand the mechanisms underneath them
  • Separate transferable principles from context-specific features that should not be copied
  • Adapt and combine cross-industry mechanisms into new business-solution concepts
  • Test the strongest concepts through evidence, prototypes and proportionate pilots

What’s covered

Reframe the Challenge for Cross-Industry Search

Every length
  • Define the real business challengeParticipants begin with the problem the organization is actually trying to solve rather than with a preferred solution.
  • Strip away the industry languageIndustry-specific terminology can make a challenge appear more unique than it really is.
  • Identify the functional problemParticipants examine what the system must actually accomplish.
  • Define the transfer conditionsBefore searching externally, participants identify the requirements a useful solution must ultimately respect, such as customer needs, regulation, cost, scale, safety, technology, workforce realities or delivery environment.

Explore How Other Industries Solve the Problem

90 minutes and longer
  • Search by function — not by sector nameParticipants identify industries where the underlying functional challenge is especially important, frequent or costly and deliberately search beyond obvious neighboring sectors.
  • Build the solution safariParticipants explore a curated set of real cross-industry examples through physical solution stations, case cards, gallery walks or digital equivalents depending on the delivery format.
  • Deconstruct why the solution worksParticipants move beyond the visible feature and examine the process, incentives, information, technology, human behavior, roles, economics or operating choices making the solution effective.
  • Look for recurring patternsSeveral industries may solve similar functional problems through related mechanisms.

Transfer & Adapt the Underlying Mechanism

3 hours and longer
  • Separate mechanism from contextParticipants describe the useful mechanism in neutral terms before attempting to apply it.
  • Test transferabilityA solution successful elsewhere may depend on customer behavior, regulation, economics, technology, infrastructure or capabilities that do not exist in the new environment.
  • Adapt — do not copyParticipants redesign the mechanism around the organization's own users, processes, capabilities and constraints rather than reproducing the original solution intact.
  • Combine solutions across industriesThe strongest idea may combine mechanisms from several domains rather than transfer one solution directly.

Build, Test & Implement the New Solution

Full day only
  • Turn the transfer into a solution conceptParticipants convert the selected mechanism into a concrete concept describing who it serves, what changes, how the solution works and what business or operational outcome it is expected to improve.
  • Surface the critical assumptionsParticipants identify what must be true for the adapted solution to work in the new environment, including user behavior, process feasibility, technology, capabilities, cost, regulation or partner participation.
  • Prototype the mechanismParticipants choose a lightweight way to test the transferred mechanism before committing to full implementation.
  • Pilot, learn & decideParticipants define a proportionate pilot, the evidence that will indicate value and the criteria for scaling, adapting or stopping the concept.
