About this session

Driving for work is a work activity, even when the road itself is outside the employer's premises. Risk can come from the driver, the vehicle, the journey, the road environment and the way the work has been organized.

A safe driver can still be placed in an unsafe situation by unrealistic schedules, unsuitable vehicles, poor maintenance, excessive mileage or expectations that encourage distraction and rushing.

Participants learn to recognize the major factors that influence occupational road risk and make better decisions before and during a journey.

The session covers journey planning, vehicle readiness, fatigue, distraction, mobile-device use, speed, changing weather and road conditions, loading and other everyday driving decisions.

The session also moves beyond individual behavior.

Effective road-risk management depends on suitable vehicles, realistic schedules, maintenance, clear communication expectations, incident learning, supervisor decisions and organizational policies that do not reward unsafe driving.

What’s covered

Understand Occupational Road Risk

Every length
  • Look beyond driver errorRoad incidents are often described as driver mistakes, but the conditions around the driver matter too.
  • Assess the driver, vehicle, journey & environmentParticipants use a simple four-part lens: who is driving, what vehicle is being used, what the journey requires and what conditions are expected on the road.
  • Understand how exposure buildsRisk changes with time spent driving, mileage, frequency, night work, unfamiliar routes and repeated journeys under pressure.
  • Recognize higher-risk momentsHeavy traffic, poor visibility, severe weather, unfamiliar locations, time pressure, reversing, loading areas, roadside stops and interactions with other road users can all increase demand.

Prepare the Driver, Vehicle & Journey

90 minutes and longer
  • Start with driver readinessDriving demands attention, coordination and judgment.
  • Check the vehicle before the journeyParticipants review practical readiness checks such as tires, lights, windows, mirrors, warning indicators, visible damage, fluids where appropriate and anything else relevant to the vehicle and task.
  • Plan the route, time & recoveryJourney planning includes more than choosing the fastest route.
  • Secure loads & keep the driving space usableLoose equipment, bags, tools or materials can become hazards during sudden movement and can interfere with visibility or vehicle controls.

Manage Fatigue, Distraction & Driving Demand

3 hours and longer
  • Treat fatigue as a safety signalFatigue can slow reaction, reduce attention and impair judgment.
  • Remove mobile-phone pressure from the driveCalls, messages, navigation changes, emails and work applications can divert visual, manual and cognitive attention.
  • Manage speed & space for the conditionsSafe speed is influenced by visibility, traffic, road surface, weather, vehicle load and available stopping distance.
  • Expect conditions to changeRain, ice, heat, glare, darkness, fog, road works, congestion and unfamiliar routes can change driving demand quickly.
