About this session

Yesterday, success meant doing your own work well. Today, somebody else's priorities are unclear, another employee needs feedback, a deadline is slipping, your own manager wants an update, and a team member has asked you to make a decision you have never made before.

Becoming a manager changes the unit of work. You still contribute personally, but your effectiveness increasingly depends on what other people understand, own, decide, learn and deliver.

First-Time Manager Essentials helps new managers make that shift deliberately.

The program starts by clarifying what management adds to the role: creating direction, setting expectations, making or enabling decisions, supporting performance, developing capability, coordinating work, maintaining appropriate standards, and representing the team's needs upward.

The manager does not become responsible for doing everyone's work or having every answer.

Participants then build the basic operating rhythm around the team.

They learn how to turn broad priorities into clear expectations, establish useful one-to-ones and team check-ins, define decision and escalation routes, and communicate in a way that gives employees enough context to act. The aim is not more meetings.

It is a dependable management system in which employees know what matters, where they have autonomy and when they need support.

The program also introduces the core developmental responsibilities of management.

New managers learn to delegate an outcome rather than merely offload tasks, coach without immediately supplying the answer, give feedback that identifies an observable behavior and next step, and respond when performance is not meeting the required standard.

Each skill is introduced as part of an integrated management cycle, with dedicated Marketplace sessions available for deeper practice.

Managing people also means handling situations that do not fit neatly into a management technique. An employee raises a concern the manager cannot solve alone.

Two priorities conflict. Workload is becoming unrealistic.

A team member needs specialist support. A decision sits outside the manager's authority.

Participants learn how to recognize the limits of their role, use internal support appropriately, manage upward and escalate without abandoning their own responsibilities.

Longer formats move from understanding into repeated application. Participants test expectations, one-to-ones, delegation, feedback and manager routines in real or simulated work; review what employees actually needed; and adjust their approach.

The result is a First 90-Day Manager Operating System that helps a new manager establish dependable habits before reactive management becomes the default.

What’s covered

Make the Shift From Doing the Work to Managing the Work

Every length
  • Redefine what success looks likeAn individual contributor can often judge the day by what they personally completed.
  • Understand what you own — and what you do notNew managers can either underestimate the role or absorb responsibility for everything around the team.
  • Move from expert answers to manager judgmentNew managers are often promoted because they were good at solving problems.
  • Build your support system before you need itManagement includes situations a first-time manager should not navigate alone.

Create Clarity and a Dependable Management Rhythm

90 minutes and longer
  • Turn priorities into clear expectationsEmployees need more than a list of tasks.
  • Use one-to-ones for management — not status collectionA useful one-to-one creates space for priorities, obstacles, feedback, development, support and issues that may not surface in group meetings.
  • Create team rhythms that serve a purposeNew managers can inherit meetings and communication habits without knowing why they exist.
  • Make priority changes visibleTeams struggle when managers add a new priority without explaining what happens to existing commitments.

Build Capability Through Delegation, Coaching, and Feedback

3 hours and longer
  • Delegate ownership — not just extra tasksDelegation should clarify the outcome, authority, support, review points and what remains with the manager.
  • Coach when thinking is more useful than an answerCoaching is valuable when an employee can develop judgment by thinking through an issue.
  • Give feedback while the learning can still helpFirst-time managers may delay corrective feedback because they want to preserve the relationship, or provide vague praise because it feels easier than explaining what specifically worked.
  • Respond to performance gaps before they become a surpriseA missed standard may arise from unclear expectations, insufficient capability, unavailable resources, conflicting priorities, a process barrier or behavior that needs to change.

Build a Management System People Can Rely On

Full day only
  • Create trust through predictable management behaviorNew managers build trust through ordinary evidence: commitments are followed through, information is handled appropriately, expectations do not change without explanation and employees receive the manager support they were told would be available.
  • Make it possible for people to raise what you need to knowManagers need employees to surface mistakes, uncertainty, workload concerns, disagreement and emerging problems before those issues become harder to resolve.
  • Manage upward instead of passing pressure downwardA first-time manager sits between employee reality and wider organizational expectations.
  • Review your management system — not just your confidenceFeeling more confident does not by itself establish that management is working.
