About this session

Ramp and ground teams work in an environment where weather can change the physical demands of an already active job.

Direct sun, high temperatures, humidity, cold, wind, rain, exposed surfaces, protective clothing, and rapid movement between indoor and outdoor areas can all influence hydration, thermal comfort, concentration, physical fatigue, skin health, and recovery.

The effects also interact with workload. Baggage handling, equipment movement, prolonged standing, walking, protective clothing, turnaround peaks, night work, and limited opportunities to recover may make hot or cold conditions more difficult to tolerate.

This session helps employees understand how weather affects the body, recognize early changes in wellbeing and function, use practical personal strategies where appropriate, and distinguish those actions from shade, warming, break access, staffing, equipment, scheduling, and other controls that sit with the organization.

What your people take away

  • Understand how temperature, humidity, direct sun, wind, rain, physical effort, clothing, and exposure duration combine to influence thermal strain
  • Recognize early physical and cognitive changes associated with excessive heat or cold before they become normalized as part of ramp work
  • Build realistic habits around hydration, cooling, warming, clothing, skin protection, breaks, and recovery across changing weather conditions
  • Understand why new starters, returning workers, changing seasons, consecutive hot days, night work, and individual health can alter how conditions are experienced
  • Recognize how environmental exposure can interact with physical workload, fatigue, concentration, comfort, and recovery across a demanding shift
  • Distinguish personal weather-management strategies from shade, shelter, break access, work scheduling, staffing, equipment, and other organizational controls

What’s covered

Understand How Weather Changes Physical Demand

Every length
  • Temperature is only part of the weather loadHeat, humidity, direct sun, wind, rain, clothing, workload, and exposure duration all influence how demanding an outdoor shift feels.
  • Physical work generates heat tooWalking, baggage handling, pushing, pulling, equipment work, and repeated movement generate body heat independently of the weather.
  • Cold, wind and wet conditions interactCool air may become substantially more uncomfortable when combined with wind or wet clothing, particularly during prolonged outdoor exposure.
  • Weather can affect more than comfortThermal strain can influence fatigue, headaches, physical tolerance, mood, concentration, and how recovered someone feels after the shift.

Support Hydration, Thermal Comfort & Skin Health

90 minutes and longer
  • Hydration needs to fit the real shiftPhysical work, heat, long outdoor periods, protective clothing, and limited breaks can change normal drinking patterns.
  • Cooling and warming are both forms of recoveryMoving away from environmental exposure can provide the body with an opportunity to reduce accumulated thermal demand.
  • Clothing has to work with the environmentClothing may provide protection from sun, rain, wind, or cold while also changing heat retention and physical comfort.
  • Sun exposure can accumulate without extreme heatUltraviolet exposure can occur during ordinary outdoor work even when the temperature is moderate or the sky is not completely clear.

Recognize When Weather Is Affecting Health & Recovery

3 hours and longer
  • Heat-related change can begin graduallyUnusual tiredness, headache, dizziness, nausea, cramps, irritability, reduced concentration, or feeling increasingly unwell may indicate that heat exposure deserves attention.
  • Cold can change comfort and functionPersistent shivering, increasing numbness, painful cold, reduced hand comfort, or unusual difficulty functioning normally should not simply be accepted as part of winter ramp work.
  • Recovery between shifts mattersA demanding period of heat or cold may influence fatigue, hydration, sleep, physical comfort, and how someone feels when the next shift begins.
  • Individual responses will differAcclimatization, recent illness, medication, health status, sleep, physical workload, previous exposure, and time away from the environment can all influence how conditions are experienced.

Build Sustainable Weather Health Into Ramp Work

Full day only
  • Changing conditions require changing health strategiesThe most appropriate wellbeing approach may differ between a cool morning, a hot afternoon, strong wind, prolonged rain, or a sudden seasonal change.
  • New and returning workers may experience conditions differentlySomeone entering hot or cold work for the first time, returning after time away, or moving between climates may not have the same recent adaptation as an experienced coworker.
  • Personal preparation has clear limitsHydration, clothing, skin protection, and recovery can support health, but employees cannot individually provide shade, shelter, sufficient staffing, appropriate break coverage, or different scheduling.
  • Recurring patterns can guide better preventionAggregated reports of heat discomfort, cold exposure, insufficient recovery, sun exposure, or recurring high-demand periods can reveal patterns beyond individual experience.
