About this session
High blood pressure, also called hypertension, develops when blood consistently pushes against the blood-vessel walls with more force than is healthy. It usually causes no obvious symptoms, so someone can feel completely well while their blood pressure remains elevated.
The only reliable way to know is to have it measured correctly.
Blood pressure can change throughout the day, and one reading does not always tell the complete story. Stress, recent activity, caffeine, smoking, posture, conversation and measurement technique can all affect a result.
Participants therefore need to understand both numbers, how accurate checks are completed and why repeat or home measurements may sometimes be recommended.
This session begins with practical action rather than a long medical lecture. Participants prepare for a reliable blood-pressure check, identify everyday habits that may support healthier readings and plan useful questions for a healthcare professional.
They also learn why persistent high blood pressure matters: over time, it can place additional strain on blood vessels and organs including the heart, brain, kidneys and eyes.

What’s covered
Know Your Numbers and Take Practical Action
Every length- Prepare for a more reliable readingParticipants learn how recent exercise, caffeine, smoking, conversation, posture and an unsupported arm may affect a blood-pressure result.
- Understand the two numbersThe facilitator explains that the upper number is the systolic pressure, measured when the heart contracts, while the lower number is the diastolic pressure between beats.
- Build a blood-pressure-supportive dayParticipants identify realistic opportunities involving meals, movement, sleep, smoking, alcohol and stress recovery.
- Decide what happens after the checkParticipants create a practical response for a reading that is higher than expected, including remaining calm, following the provider's repeat-measurement process and understanding when routine follow-up is needed.
Explore What May Be Influencing Your Blood Pressure

- Review food patterns without reducing it to one ingredientParticipants examine overall eating patterns, sodium, highly processed foods, fruit, vegetables and practical meal routines.
- Connect movement, sleep, stress and alcoholParticipants explore how physical activity, insufficient sleep, ongoing stress and alcohol can sit within the wider blood-pressure picture.
- Map where working life gets in the wayParticipants trace meals, movement, sleep, breaks, travel and stress across a typical working week.
