About this session

Retail stock handling is rarely one simple lift.

Employees may receive deliveries, move cages and totes, open and reposition cartons, replenish shelves at different heights, transfer stock through restricted back rooms, and repeat the same physical demands throughout busy trading periods.

The current session already recognizes that the real workload is shaped by the task, the load, the person, the route, and the surrounding environment rather than by weight alone.

This session helps participants understand how handling demand builds across the complete stock journey — from delivery and staging through movement, storage, replenishment, and final shelf placement.

Employees explore practical ways to reduce unnecessary carrying, reaching, twisting, awkward starts, poor staging, and repeated handling while making better use of available cages, carts, and other approved aids.

The session also looks beyond individual technique. Shelf height, stockroom layout, delivery sequencing, aisle congestion, equipment availability, workload, staffing, and peak trading conditions can all determine how physically demanding handling becomes.

Participants learn to recognize those patterns and distinguish adjustments they can make themselves from changes that need to be addressed through store planning and work design.

What your people take away

  • Understand how load characteristics, starting height, carrying distance, grip, route, frequency, and destination combine to influence physical handling demand
  • Recognize how cartons, cages, totes, shelf replenishment, and mixed stockroom work can create different patterns of back, shoulder, arm, hand, and lower-body load
  • Plan movement more effectively by considering staging, destination readiness, route conditions, visibility, working height, and the availability of suitable aids
  • Reduce avoidable physical demand through better positioning, fewer unnecessary transfers, appropriate task variation, and use of available equipment
  • Recognize when changing conditions, physical fatigue, restricted access, unstable loads, or unavailable equipment mean the original handling approach needs to change
  • Distinguish personal handling strategies from shelf design, stockroom layout, delivery sequencing, equipment provision, staffing, and other organizational controls

What’s covered

Understand the Whole Handling Operation

Every length
  • The load is only one part of the taskWeight matters, but size, shape, stability, grip, visibility, carrying distance, frequency, and destination can all change how demanding a handling task becomes.
  • Starting and finishing height change the demandA carton moved between comfortable working heights creates a different physical challenge from one lifted from floor level or placed onto an overhead shelf.
  • The route is part of the physical loadLong distances, congestion, thresholds, restricted access, customer traffic, and repeated changes of direction can add effort even before the final placement occurs.
  • Repeated movement builds across the shiftA manageable carton may become considerably more demanding when similar movements are repeated throughout deliveries, replenishment, and trading peaks.

Reduce Unnecessary Handling & Improve Stock Flow

Every length
  • Good staging can remove an entire movementPoorly positioned stock may be moved several times before it reaches its final destination.
  • Destination readiness mattersEmployees may arrive with a load only to discover that the shelf, storage area, or staging location is not ready.
  • Available equipment should change the taskCages, carts, and other approved equipment can reduce the amount of stock that needs to be carried manually when they are suitable and available.
  • Work height can often be improved before the task startsThe position of cartons, totes, cages, shelves, and temporary staging areas influences the posture required later.

Manage Cages, Shelves & Peak Physical Demand

Half day only
  • Pushing and pulling create their own physical loadMoving a loaded cage or cart requires force to start, stop, steer, and position the equipment, particularly in confined spaces or around changing floor conditions.
  • Shelf replenishment repeats across multiple heightsEmployees may repeatedly move between cages, cartons, low shelves, mid-height displays, and overhead positions while replenishing stock.
  • Peak periods compress the workSeasonal deliveries, promotions, weekend trading, and replenishment windows may increase the number of handling tasks performed within a shorter period.
  • Physical tolerance changes during the shiftThe same cage, carton, or shelf task may feel very different after several hours of standing, walking, reaching, and repeated stock movement.

Recognize Barriers & Strengthen Handling Prevention

Half day only
  • Notice when physical recovery is changingRecurring back or shoulder discomfort, reduced grip comfort, increasing stiffness, lower-body fatigue, or difficulty recovering between shifts can reveal patterns worth paying attention to.
  • Describe the handling conditions clearlyUseful context may include the load, shelf height, carrying distance, cage or cart, route, frequency, congestion, equipment availability, and point in the shift.
  • Personal strategy has clear limitsEmployees can make some decisions about staging, positioning, task variation, and use of available equipment, but they cannot personally redesign stockrooms, shelves, staffing, or delivery schedules.
  • Recurring patterns can guide better retail designAggregated and de-identified workforce themes may reveal repeated difficulties associated with particular shelves, routes, stockrooms, deliveries, equipment, or trading periods.
