About this session
Musculoskeletal symptoms in manufacturing plants rarely have one simple cause. Load, repetition, awkward duration, recovery, prior health, stress, and beliefs can all influence pain, while changing production periods alter exposure from week to week.
This session gives workers and supervisors a practical, evidence-informed framework for responding without catastrophizing symptoms or dismissing them.
Participants examine pain as a protective experience, map demands such as carrying, fixed stations, tool use, overhead reach, precision work, and constrained aisles, and select proportionate early actions.
They learn where optional preparation and gradual capacity building can help, and where task redesign, mechanical aids, staffing, sequencing, or clinical assessment are needed.
Clear boundaries protect confidentiality and keep diagnosis, rehabilitation, restrictions, and return-to-work decisions with appropriately qualified professionals.
What your people take away
- Explain why pain intensity and tissue damage do not always match
- Identify physical and organizational exposures as manufacturing phases change
- Select proportionate early responses to new or changing symptoms
- Report functional concerns clearly without diagnosing or minimizing them
- Distinguish self-management, plant modification, and clinical assessment boundaries
- Support suitable work within documented rehabilitation and return-to-work guidance

What’s covered
Make Sense of Pain Signals
Every length- Understand how pain and physical demand interactThe session begins by exploring pain as a protective experience influenced by tissue signals, previous experience, sleep, stress, workload and perceived threat.
- Distinguish short-term discomfort from concerning changeThe group looks at how unfamiliar work, increased production demand or a new task can create temporary discomfort, while other changes may warrant greater attention.
- Move beyond avoidance or pushing throughAttention turns to the two common extremes of avoiding all discomfort or continuing regardless of symptoms.
- Describe symptoms and function clearlyAttendees explore how onset, location, task exposure, symptom behavior and changes in function can be communicated in useful terms.
Manage Exposure as Work Changes
Every length- Understand how production changes physical demandThe session examines how repetition, fixed stations, precision work, overhead reach, carrying, tool use and constrained access can vary across shifts, products and production periods.
- Recognize early opportunities to adjustThe group looks at what can happen when discomfort or functional change begins to appear during work.
- Prioritize work-design controlsAttention turns to staging, adjustable workstations, mechanical assistance, tool support, material presentation and sequencing.
- Understand the role of preparation and capacityWarm-ups, strength work and gradual capacity building are explored as ways of supporting readiness and confidence.
Report, Rehabilitate, and Return Safely
90 minutes and longer- Report functional change earlyThe session explores how workers can describe what has changed, which tasks are affected and how work demands relate to the concern.
- Understand the boundary between workplace support and clinical careThe group considers the respective roles of supervisors, occupational health, treating professionals and coworkers.
- Approach return to work around capacityReturn to work is explored as a coordinated process that reflects documented abilities, restrictions and changing capacity.
- Adapt work around current needsAttendees examine how carrying, fixed-station work, overhead tasks, precision work and other manufacturing demands may be adjusted when capacity changes.
Build Musculoskeletal Health Into Everyday Production
Half day only- Recognize recurring patternsThe final module brings together symptoms, exposure and work design by looking for patterns across shifts, stations or production periods.
- Use real work to inform improvementThe group examines a production activity or workstation to understand where physical demand is being created.
- Review whether changes are actually helpingThe session considers worker feedback, recurring symptoms, task observation and changes in function as ways of understanding whether an adjustment has been effective.
- Create shared ownership across the plantThe module closes by examining how workers, supervisors, engineering, occupational health and safety teams can contribute to ongoing musculoskeletal health.
