About this session
Musculoskeletal symptoms in transportation rarely come from one simple cause.
Prolonged sitting, whole-body vibration, repeated vehicle access, loading, dock work, scanners, workshop tools, awkward positioning and limited recovery can all contribute to discomfort or changing function across the back, hips, shoulders, knees, neck and hands.
Symptoms may also change as work changes. A busy delivery period, night roster, different vehicle, workshop peak or prolonged dock shift may increase exposure even when the worker's job title stays the same.
Understanding those patterns can help people respond earlier and more proportionately.
This session helps participants make sense of musculoskeletal symptoms without dismissing them or assuming that pain always means damage.
Participants learn to notice changes in function, understand how transport exposures influence the body, use practical self-management within appropriate limits, and recognize when the task, equipment or workload needs wider review.
The program keeps diagnosis, rehabilitation and fitness-for-duty decisions with qualified professionals.
The 4- and 8-week versions extend the session into a longitudinal musculoskeletal-health program, helping participants track patterns over time, test appropriate adjustments, review recovery and identify recurring workplace barriers that may require organizational action.
What your people take away

What’s covered
Make Sense of Musculoskeletal Symptoms
Every length- Pain is real, but it is not a simple damage meterThe session begins by exploring pain as a protective experience influenced by tissue signals, previous experience, sleep, stress, workload and other contextual factors.
- Short-term soreness and changing symptoms are differentThe group considers the difference between temporary discomfort after unfamiliar or demanding work and symptoms that are persistent, worsening or associated with significant functional change.
- Avoid both complete avoidance and pushing throughParticipants explore why avoiding all movement can sometimes reduce confidence while repeatedly pushing through significant symptoms can also create problems.
- Describe what has changedAttendees consider how to describe onset, location, symptom behavior and the effect on normal transport tasks.
Understand How Transport Work Loads the Body
Every length- Sitting and vibration create cumulative loadParticipants explore how long sitting blocks and whole-body vibration affect the back, hips, neck and shoulders over time.
- Loading and vehicle access add different demandsThe group examines lifting, carrying, dock heights, trailer access, vehicle entry and exit and repeated climbing as additional physical exposures.
- Grip, scanners and tools affect the upper bodyAttendees consider repeated scanner use, steering, straps and workshop tools as sources of hand, wrist, forearm and shoulder demand.
- Peak periods change the exposureParticipants examine how nights, delays, seasonal peaks, dense routes and busy dock periods increase repetition and reduce recovery.
Reduce Exposure and Support Recovery
90 minutes and longer- Change the work before blaming the bodyThe session explores how seating, aids, access, tools, task sequencing and available support influence musculoskeletal demand.
- Use movement and recovery in proportionThe group considers movement, position variation, hydration, sleep and recovery as useful parts of musculoskeletal wellbeing.
- Build capacity graduallyAttendees explore the role of appropriate physical activity and gradual capacity building in supporting confidence and function.
- Know when personal strategies have reached their limitParticipants consider recurring symptoms linked to seats, vibration, access, loading volume, staffing or other workplace factors.
Respond Early and Support Longer-Term Function
Half day only- Report functional change earlyParticipants explore how useful reporting can focus on what has changed and which tasks are affected.
- Know when professional support may be neededThe group considers persistent or worsening symptoms, increasing weakness, spreading numbness, repeated dropping or meaningful loss of function as reasons for further assessment.
- Support suitable work during recoveryAttendees consider how temporary changes to driving duration, loading, dock work, vehicle access or other physically demanding tasks may support continued work or return to work where appropriate.
- Keep workplace and clinical roles clearThe session closes by distinguishing workplace support from clinical care.
