About this session

A cardiac-related absence may follow a heart attack, surgery, a new diagnosis, worsening symptoms or a period of investigation and treatment.

The employee may be away for a few weeks or considerably longer, and neither the manager nor the employee may know at the beginning exactly when a return will be possible.

Managers need to remain supportive without pressuring the employee for medical detail or promising a return date that has not been clinically agreed.

Contact that feels helpful to one person may feel intrusive to another, while long periods of silence can leave an employee feeling disconnected or uncertain about what is happening at work.

This practical session guides managers through the full absence journey: agreeing contact, recording operational information, maintaining confidentiality, involving HR or occupational health, preparing colleagues and planning a possible return.

It also addresses situations in which recovery changes, a proposed return is delayed or the employee needs different arrangements from those first expected.

Cardiac rehabilitation and follow-up care may form an important part of recovery after a cardiac event or procedure.

Return-to-work timing and duties should be based on the employee's circumstances, the demands of the role and appropriate clinical or occupational-health advice rather than a standard timetable.
