About this session
The 'sandwich generation' describes people who are supporting both older and younger family members at the same time, often while managing a job, household and their own health.
The practical demands can be significant, but the emotional load can be just as heavy: guilt, worry, divided attention and the feeling that somebody always needs more than you can give.
This session focuses on the mental-health impact of living between competing caring responsibilities.
Participants identify where their capacity is being stretched, distinguish genuine responsibility from over-responsibility and explore the beliefs that make it difficult to rest, say no or ask for help.
Participants then build practical ways to protect energy, communicate capacity and create support across work, family and professional services.
The final module focuses on sustainable caregiving: maintaining identity beyond the caregiver role, recognizing signs of depletion and creating an early-action plan before pressure becomes overwhelming.

What’s covered
Recognize the Sandwich Generation Load
Every length- Map all the roles competing for capacityParticipants identify the practical and emotional demands coming from work, children or younger dependents, older family members, relationships and their own wellbeing.
- Notice the mental load that is easy to missParticipants identify the planning, remembering, anticipating and coordinating that happens around appointments, school, care arrangements, medication, transport or household responsibilities.
- Recognize your early signs of depletionParticipants identify signs such as irritability, forgetfulness, emotional flatness, difficulty concentrating, sleep disruption or feeling that every new request is too much.
- Identify which pressure is most urgentParticipants separate long-term responsibilities from immediate crises and identify where attention is genuinely needed now.
Reduce Guilt and Over-Responsibility
90 minutes and longer- Question the 'I should be able to do it all' ruleParticipants identify expectations they hold about being the reliable employee, good parent, supportive partner or responsible adult child and examine whether those standards are realistically compatible with the time and energy available.
- Separate care from total responsibilityParticipants distinguish caring deeply about someone from being responsible for meeting every need personally.
- Allow trade-offs without calling them failureParticipants practice making conscious choices when two legitimate needs compete and acknowledge that choosing one priority may mean another receives less attention temporarily.
- Notice when guilt is driving overextensionParticipants identify where guilt leads them to say yes automatically, cancel recovery or take on tasks nobody explicitly asked them to own.
Protect Your Own Capacity
3 hours and longer- Build a minimum viable wellbeing routineParticipants identify the basic habits they most need to preserve during high-care periods, such as meals, hydration, movement, medication routines, sleep opportunity or brief recovery.
- Protect small pockets of recoveryParticipants identify realistic moments where they can step out of both work and caregiving roles, even briefly.
- Reduce decisions where you canParticipants identify recurring household, work or caregiving decisions that can be simplified, shared or prepared in advance.
- Keep an identity beyond caregivingParticipants identify relationships, interests or parts of themselves that are not defined by being useful to someone else.
Build Support Around the Caregiving Role
Full day only- Map who can help with whatParticipants identify who can provide practical help, emotional support, information, workplace decisions or professional services.
- Make specific requestsParticipants practice asking for concrete help such as transport, a school pickup, appointment cover, clearer work priorities or temporary flexibility.
- Communicate at work without overdisclosingParticipants identify what a manager needs to understand about capacity or scheduling and practice requesting practical support without feeling required to share private health or family details they would prefer to keep confidential.
- Know when the load needs more supportParticipants identify persistent exhaustion, anxiety, low mood, sleep disruption or significant difficulty functioning that may justify professional, medical or workplace support.
