About this session

Menstrual wellbeing is about more than access to period products. It includes having accurate information, suitable facilities, privacy, supportive workplace conversations and the ability to manage symptoms without embarrassment or disadvantage.

The World Health Organization describes menstrual health as being informed, supported and able to menstruate with dignity throughout the reproductive years and into perimenopause.

Periods affect people differently. Some experience little disruption, while others manage pain, heavy bleeding, fatigue, headaches, digestive symptoms, low mood or difficulty concentrating.

Symptoms may also change because of contraception, stress, perimenopause or conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids or premenstrual disorders.

This session helps participants identify practical ways to manage menstrual health during the working day, communicate needs without unnecessary disclosure and recognize when symptoms deserve professional assessment.

It also explores how colleagues, managers and employers can reduce stigma and create a more supportive working environment.

What’s covered

Every length
  • Map how symptoms affect workParticipants identify how pain, heavy bleeding, fatigue, headaches, nausea, digestive symptoms, mood changes or reduced concentration may affect different parts of the working day.
  • Prepare for more difficult daysParticipants create a personal working-day plan covering period products, spare clothing, access to toilets, hydration, meals, rest opportunities and any clinician-approved pain-management approach.
  • Use heat, movement and rest practicallyParticipants compare simple supportive measures such as heat, gentle movement, stretching, rest and pacing.
  • Respond to unexpected bleeding or leaksParticipants plan discreetly for leaks, a period beginning unexpectedly or heavier-than-usual bleeding.

Communicate Needs and Reduce Workplace Barriers

90 minutes and longer
  • Decide what you want to shareParticipants prepare concise ways to explain the functional impact of symptoms without disclosing a diagnosis, detailed bleeding information or other personal medical history.
  • Ask for practical changesParticipants identify adjustments that might help, such as easier toilet access, short breaks, temporary flexibility, a private space, heat packs, seating changes, remote work where possible or adapting a physically demanding task.
  • Create more supportive manager conversationsParticipants examine how managers can respond privately, listen without minimizing symptoms and agree practical next steps.
  • Reduce taboo without forcing disclosureParticipants identify everyday behaviors that make menstrual health easier to discuss, such as neutral language, visible product access and respectful policies.

Recognize When Symptoms Need More Attention

3 hours and longer
  • Track patterns that affect daily lifeParticipants record timing, bleeding, pain, mood, fatigue and the effect on work across several cycles when useful.
  • Respond to heavy or prolonged bleedingParticipants learn that repeatedly changing period products every one to two hours, needing more than one product at once, passing large clots or bleeding that substantially affects daily life can indicate heavy periods.
  • Take severe pain and other symptoms seriouslyParticipants identify severe or worsening pain, pain during sex, bowel movements or urination, bleeding between periods or symptoms that repeatedly cause absence from work as reasons to seek professional advice.
  • Build a more menstrual-friendly workplaceParticipants review facilities, product access, uniforms, break arrangements, attendance policies, manager education and communication routes.
