About this session
Reducing salt is often interpreted as removing the salt shaker and accepting food that tastes disappointing.
In reality, much of the sodium people consume may already be present in packaged foods, sauces, breads, soups, processed meats, ready meals and restaurant dishes before any salt is added at the table.
Flavor also comes from much more than salt. Acidity, aroma, heat, sweetness, bitterness, umami, texture and cooking methods all influence how satisfying food tastes.
Garlic, ginger, onions, herbs, spices, chilli, citrus and vinegar can add depth, while roasting, browning and toasting can bring out flavors already present in ingredients.
This practical session helps participants recognize repeated sources of sodium and make proportionate changes without removing culturally important foods or cooking everything from scratch.
They compare labels, explore seasoning combinations and adapt familiar meals, workplace lunches, takeout and convenience foods.
The aim is not to eliminate sodium or prescribe one universal target. Participants leave with practical ways to reduce excess salt while keeping food enjoyable, familiar and realistic.
