About this session
Investing can feel complicated long before anyone reaches the question of what to invest in.
An employee may hear terms such as bond, ETF, dividend, yield, expense ratio, benchmark, brokerage account, volatility, or total return without having been shown how those pieces fit together.
Someone may even transfer cash into an investment account and assume the money is already invested when it is still sitting in cash.
This session starts at that level. Participants distinguish saving from investing and learn how accessible savings, fixed-term savings, interest, liquidity, inflation, and local deposit protection fit together.
They then build a simple map of the main investment building blocks: bonds, stocks, funds, and ETFs, including the different ways those assets can generate income or change in value.
The second half teaches participants how to read basic investment information.
They learn to distinguish the provider from the account and the account from the underlying investment; identify objectives, holdings, risk, fees, yield, performance, and benchmarks; and understand how money actually moves from cash into an investment and back again.
The session finishes with a Beginner Investment Information Checklist designed to help employees understand an unfamiliar product before they decide whether deeper strategic or professional guidance is needed.

What’s covered
Understand Saving, Cash & Investment Accounts
Every length- Separate saving from investing before comparing productsParticipants learn that saving generally prioritizes access and capital stability while investing accepts market uncertainty in pursuit of potential income or growth.
- Understand how cash savings products workParticipants compare accessible savings, interest-bearing accounts, fixed-term or term-deposit products, and other common deposit structures through interest, access, notice, term, fees, restrictions, and provider protection.
- Understand interest, compounding & inflation at a basic levelParticipants see how interest can be credited and how earnings can themselves begin earning over time.
- Distinguish the account from what is held inside itParticipants learn that an investment account, brokerage account, pension account, or platform is a container or access route rather than the investment itself.
Understand Bonds, Stocks, Funds & ETFs
90 minutes and longer- Understand a bond as lending — not as guaranteed cashParticipants learn that a bond generally represents lending money to a government, company, or other issuer under specified terms.
- Understand a stock / share as ownershipParticipants learn that a stock or share represents an ownership interest in a company and that potential return can come from price changes and dividends where declared.
- Understand how funds pool investmentsParticipants learn that collective funds pool investor money and hold assets according to a stated mandate.
- Understand ETF as a structure — not a recommendationParticipants learn that an ETF is a fund whose shares or units trade on an exchange and that ETFs can provide broad or highly concentrated exposures.
Read Risk, Return, Fees & Investment Information
3 hours and longer- Separate income, price change & total returnParticipants distinguish savings interest, bond income, dividends, fund distributions, capital gains, and capital losses and learn why total return considers both income and changes in investment value.
- Understand liquidity, volatility & the main beginner risksParticipants learn that liquidity concerns how readily value can become usable cash, while volatility concerns how much an investment's market value moves.
- Understand fees before comparing performanceParticipants identify account, platform, investment-management, fund, transaction, advisory, foreign-exchange, and access-related costs where applicable.
- Read the factsheet — not just the return numberParticipants practice locating an investment's objective, holdings, geographic or sector exposure, benchmark, management approach, risk information, fees, distribution policy, historical performance, currency, manager, and document date.
Understand How an Investment Actually Works in Practice
Full day only- Distinguish provider, platform, account, manager & investmentParticipants map the different roles involved in an investment.
- Follow cash from deposit to investment ownershipParticipants follow a simple transaction flow from transferring cash into an account, selecting an investment, placing a purchase instruction, acquiring shares or units, experiencing price and income changes, paying applicable fees, and eventually selling back to cash under the relevant market and settlement rules.
- Read an investment statement & find what you actually ownParticipants learn to locate uninvested cash, holdings, units or shares, current price, market value, contributions or deposits, distributions, fees, and gain or loss information where shown.
- Check the product & provider before sending moneyParticipants finish with a basic due-diligence framework covering product structure, regulation, provider identity, asset custody, fees, liquidity, risk, investment holdings, documentation, and common scam warning signs.
