About this session

Alcohol can become embedded in workplace culture through celebrations, networking events, client entertainment, conferences, travel and informal team socializing.

In some organizations, drinking is treated as the default way to connect, reward performance or demonstrate that someone belongs.

This can affect employees differently. Some people enjoy drinking, some are reducing or avoiding alcohol, and others may abstain for health, pregnancy, medication, recovery, cultural, religious or personal reasons.

When alcohol dominates workplace social life, employees may feel pressure to explain themselves, participate unwillingly or miss valuable opportunities for connection.

This session looks beyond individual drinking choices and examines the environment surrounding them.

Participants explore how event design, language, leadership behavior, expense practices and team traditions can unintentionally normalize alcohol or make non-drinkers feel less included.

The aim is not to eliminate every workplace event involving alcohol or supervise what adults choose to drink.

Instead, the session helps organizations create genuine choice, reduce social pressure and ensure that access to relationships, recognition and career opportunities does not depend on alcohol participation.

Alcohol affects health in different ways depending on quantity, frequency, personal circumstances and the context in which drinking occurs.

Workplace conditions such as long hours, job strain and social norms may also influence alcohol use, making culture an appropriate part of prevention rather than treating the issue solely as an individual responsibility.
