About this session
Food shopping can be difficult to control because dozens of small decisions happen inside one basket.
Pack sizes vary, promotions change the comparison, larger quantities look cheaper, familiar brands compete with lower-cost alternatives and a bargain only remains a bargain if the food is actually used.
This session helps participants make those decisions more deliberately.
They map what a normal food shop needs to cover, compare products using unit cost and realistic portions, identify where substitutions can protect both usefulness and value and work through common promotion, bulk-buy and stock-up decisions without assuming that buying more automatically means saving more.
Participants then connect shopping with what happens at home. They examine top-up trips, duplicated purchases, forgotten ingredients and food waste and build a repeatable shopping system around a core list, flexible alternatives and realistic household use.
The aim is not to create the cheapest possible basket. It is to get more useful food from the money already being spent.

What’s covered
Build a Food Shop Around What You Actually Need
Every length- Start with what the shop needs to coverParticipants map the breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks and household food needs the next shop genuinely has to support.
- Check what is already at homeParticipants carry out a simple cupboard, fridge and freezer check before planning new purchases.
- Build a core list with flexible optionsParticipants separate reliable household staples from items where brand, variety or format can change according to price.
- Set the basket before the extras appearParticipants estimate the cost of their planned basket before shopping and decide how much flexibility is available for additional items.
Compare Food Value Properly
90 minutes and longer- Use unit price to make packs comparableParticipants compare products sold in different sizes by converting them to a common unit such as price per kilogram, liter or item.
- Calculate what a usable portion really costsParticipants move beyond price per pack and estimate how many realistic servings or uses a product will provide in their household.
- Compare store brands & alternatives with purposeParticipants choose food categories where brand flexibility is realistic and compare lower-cost alternatives against what they actually need from the product.
- Add waste into the value calculationParticipants compare two apparently similar deals and calculate what happens if part of the larger or cheaper product regularly goes unused.
Use Deals, Bulk Buying & Substitutions Intelligently
3 hours and longer- Test the promotion against the normal priceParticipants calculate what a multi-buy, loyalty price or percentage promotion actually saves compared with buying the amount they originally intended.
- Work out whether bulk will really be usedParticipants compare the lower unit cost of a larger pack with household consumption, storage capacity and likely shelf life.
- Substitute the expensive part of the basketParticipants identify categories where price changes have pushed the basket upward and generate lower-cost alternatives that still perform the same job.
- Stock up with a rule, not a feelingParticipants create a simple stock-up decision covering normal usage, current price, storage, expiry and how much is already at home.
Stop Purchased Food Becoming Wasted Money
Full day only- Trace what regularly goes uneatenParticipants identify the foods most often discarded, forgotten or left unfinished and examine why.
- Design the shop around real storageParticipants consider fridge, freezer and cupboard capacity before making larger purchases or stocking up.
- Understand what drives the top-up shopParticipants review smaller shopping trips between main shops and identify whether they are planned fresh-food purchases or the result of forgotten essentials, poor stock visibility or meals that were never properly covered.
- Build a repeatable food-shopping reviewParticipants create a short post-shop and pre-shop review covering what was used, what remained, what was wasted and which prices changed noticeably.
