About this session

Most people already talk to themselves throughout the working day. The important question is what that internal language does when pressure rises.

Before a presentation it may become, “I’m going to mess this up.” After feedback it may become, “I’m obviously not good enough.” During uncertainty, one difficult moment can quickly turn into a much bigger conclusion.

This session takes affirmations away from generic slogans and turns them into a practical self-talk skill.

Participants identify the phrases that appear automatically during real workplace situations, test whether those thoughts are facts, predictions or global judgments, and rewrite them into statements that are believable, specific and connected to something they can actually do.

Participants then build and practice their own phrase bank for presentations, difficult conversations, feedback, mistakes and uncertain situations. The aim is not to convince yourself that everything is fine.

It is to use language that makes the next constructive action easier. This is workplace wellbeing education rather than therapy or treatment for a mental health condition.

What your people take away

  • Recognize the self-talk that appears automatically during pressure, feedback and uncertainty
  • Distinguish realistic self-support from exaggerated or unbelievable positive statements
  • Build affirmations around evidence, personal values and actions within your control
  • Use short self-talk routines before, during and after difficult workplace moments
  • Create a personal phrase bank and practical system for testing what genuinely helps

What’s covered

Make Self-Talk Credible

Every length
  • Capture what you actually say to yourselfParticipants return to a recent presentation, mistake, difficult conversation or uncertain situation and write down the exact sentence that appeared internally.
  • Separate facts from predictionsParticipants take recurring statements such as “I’m going to get this wrong” or “They think I’m incompetent” and sort the language into observable facts, predictions and global judgments.
  • Find your believable rangeParticipants compare exaggerated statements such as “I am completely confident” with alternatives their mind can genuinely accept.
  • Anchor the statement in real evidenceParticipants identify demonstrated skills, previous experiences, personal values and preparation they can genuinely draw on.

Write Affirmations That Support Action

90 minutes and longer
  • Use the three-part formulaParticipants build affirmations using three elements: something genuinely true, an action within their control and the direction they want to move.
  • Stop promising yourself the outcomeParticipants identify affirmations that depend on other people's reactions or outcomes they cannot control.
  • Turn self-criticism into coaching languageParticipants take the phrases they use after mistakes and rewrite them as language that still preserves responsibility.
  • Write for specific workplace momentsParticipants create separate statements for several situations rather than relying on one generic phrase for everything.

Use Them in Real Workplace Moments

3 hours and longer
  • Build a pre-pressure cue routineParticipants combine one short phrase with a simple physical or practical cue before a demanding moment.
  • Stay open while receiving feedbackParticipants practice statements that help them remain present while hearing challenging information, such as reminding themselves that feedback can contain useful data without defining their entire capability.
  • Recover after something goes wrongParticipants create a short post-mistake sequence: name what happened, use a compassionate but accurate statement, identify any repair required and choose the next action.
  • Stay grounded when you do not know yetParticipants build language for uncertain periods when the mind is tempted to fill gaps with worst-case conclusions.

Build a Practice That Sticks

Full day only
  • Connect each phrase to a real cueParticipants decide exactly when each statement will be used.
  • Keep the phrase bank smallParticipants reduce their collection to a small number of statements they can actually remember and retrieve under pressure.
  • Run a seven-day real-world testParticipants choose one or two phrases to test for a working week and record what happens next.
  • Know when words are not the answerParticipants identify situations where changing self-talk is useful and where a different response is required.
