About this session
AI tools can make work faster, but they can also create new demands on attention. Every prompt, suggestion, generated option, refinement loop and notification can pull the mind into another micro-decision.
Used without clear boundaries, AI can leave people feeling busy and cognitively active without necessarily being focused on the work that matters most.
This session helps participants understand how AI changes the attentional environment around work.
They identify where AI is supporting focus and where it is creating fragmentation, repeated checking, unnecessary iteration or constant switching between human thinking and machine output.
Participants then practice setting a clearer intention before opening an AI tool, working in defined interaction windows and returning attention to the underlying task rather than following every generated possibility.
The final module helps them build a personal AI-attention system that protects focused work while still using AI where it genuinely adds value.
What your people take away
- Recognize when AI is supporting focus and when it is fragmenting attention
- Set a clear purpose before opening an AI tool or starting another prompt cycle
- Reduce unnecessary checking, prompting and endless refinement
- Return attention to the underlying task after AI-assisted work
- Build practical boundaries that preserve deliberate attention while using AI productively

What’s covered
See What AI Is Doing to Your Attention
Every length- Map your AI attention loopsParticipants identify where AI enters their day and what happens next.
- Distinguish support from fragmentationParticipants compare moments when AI reduces cognitive friction with moments when it creates more branches, more checking or more choices.
- Notice the pull of another promptParticipants identify when curiosity or uncertainty leads to one more prompt even after the task is already good enough.
- Identify the real task underneath the toolParticipants name the underlying objective before focusing on the AI interaction itself.
Use AI With a Clear Attentional Goal
90 minutes and longer- Define the purpose before you open the toolParticipants state what they want AI to help with before beginning, such as generating options, summarizing, checking structure or exploring a question.
- Set the output you actually needParticipants decide whether they need one answer, three options, a draft or a critique before prompting.
- Create a stopping ruleParticipants define what will make the AI interaction complete, such as enough information to decide or one usable draft.
- Work in bounded AI windowsParticipants experiment with short, defined periods of AI interaction followed by focused work away from the tool.
Stop AI From Taking Over the Work
3 hours and longer- Avoid following every generated possibilityParticipants notice when one AI response creates multiple new directions and practice choosing which branches genuinely matter.
- Return to your own judgmentParticipants pause after receiving output and decide what they think before requesting another version.
- Stop refining when value has flattenedParticipants compare the improvement gained from each additional iteration and identify when further prompting is producing only minor changes.
- Re-enter the task without the toolParticipants close or step away from AI after obtaining the necessary input and continue the work independently for a defined period.
Build an AI-Attention System That Holds
Full day only- Decide which tasks deserve AIParticipants identify recurring tasks where AI genuinely reduces friction and tasks where opening the tool creates more switching than value.
- Protect AI-free focus periodsParticipants identify work that benefits from uninterrupted thinking and create periods where AI, messaging and other digital inputs are deliberately absent.
- Build a focus reset after AI useParticipants create a short transition after prompt-heavy work by capturing the next action, closing unnecessary outputs and returning attention to one task.
- Review whether AI actually helpedParticipants use a short weekly review to ask whether AI saved time, improved quality or reduced cognitive effort and where it instead created unnecessary attention loops.
