About this session

Financial resilience is not the same as having a large savings balance.

A resilient financial system has several ways to respond when something changes: enough visibility to understand what must still be paid, some flexibility to adjust where possible, appropriate protection for major risks and a plan for what happens if normal finances are temporarily disrupted.

This session helps participants examine their finances through that resilience lens.

They identify where one change — such as an income interruption, urgent expense or rise in an essential cost — could create pressure elsewhere, calculate the commitments that would need protecting and look for realistic ways to make the system less rigid before a setback occurs.

Participants then map the safety nets already available to them, identify important gaps and practice responding to realistic financial disruption scenarios.

They leave with a practical resilience plan covering what to strengthen now, what resources or protections they would activate if needed and how they would rebuild after a setback rather than expecting themselves to prevent every difficult event from happening.

What your people take away

  • Identify the financial pressure points where one disruption could create wider instability
  • Calculate the essential commitments that need protecting if circumstances change
  • Build realistic flexibility into spending, payment timing and financial commitments
  • Map the cash reserves, protections, benefits and support routes that form the participant's financial safety net
  • Create a practical response-and-recovery plan for adapting when finances are disrupted

What’s covered

Find Where Your Finances Are Most Vulnerable

Every length
  • Map the parts that keep everyday life runningParticipants identify the financial commitments that keep their household functioning, such as housing, food, transport, caring responsibilities and other essential costs relevant to their circumstances.
  • Find the single points of pressureParticipants look for parts of the financial system that depend heavily on one thing continuing as expected.
  • Test what would happen if something changedParticipants work through a simple scenario involving an income drop, urgent expense or increased essential cost and trace what would happen next.
  • Build your financial resilience snapshotParticipants bring the exercise together into a snapshot showing areas that are currently stronger, areas with limited room to adapt and the vulnerabilities most worth addressing first.

Build More Flexibility Into the System

90 minutes and longer
  • Separate what is fixed from what can moveParticipants sort recurring financial commitments according to how quickly they could realistically be changed, reduced, paused or rescheduled if circumstances became difficult.
  • Reduce the cost of being too rigidParticipants identify commitments that regularly consume financial room and examine whether a different plan, provider, payment structure or frequency could create more flexibility over time.
  • Build some cash-flow maneuvering roomParticipants consider what amount of uncommitted space between normal income and normal expenses would make a small disruption easier to absorb.
  • Create your temporary adjustment leversParticipants create a list of actions that could be used temporarily if money became tighter, such as changing the timing of selected payments, pausing a non-essential commitment or reducing a flexible category.

Layer Your Financial Safety Nets

3 hours and longer
  • Give each safety net a different jobParticipants map the different resources that could help during a financial setback and identify what each is designed to do.
  • Check what protection already existsParticipants identify relevant protections they may already have through personal arrangements, employment or other appropriate sources and note where more information is needed.
  • Map the support routes before you need themParticipants identify where authoritative help could come from if financial circumstances changed, including appropriate workplace resources, providers, regulated advisers or public and community support where relevant.
  • Find the gaps between the layersParticipants stress-test the combined safety-net map against different types of financial disruption and identify where no current layer responds effectively.

Prepare to Adapt & Recover

Full day only
  • Create a first-response sequenceParticipants build a simple sequence for the first stage of a financial disruption.
  • Use temporary changes as temporary changesParticipants decide which adjustments would only be used during a setback and define when normal arrangements should be reviewed or restored.
  • Rebuild the layers that were usedParticipants examine what happens after reserves, flexibility or other protections have absorbed a setback.
  • Turn the setback into better preparationParticipants conduct a short post-event review asking what worked, what was missing and what the disruption revealed about the financial system.
