About this session

Becoming a manager changes relationships immediately.

Even when the individual was already respected as a colleague or technical expert, the management role introduces authority over priorities, information, workload, opportunities, feedback, performance, and sometimes pay or progression.

People therefore begin watching different things.

Employees want to know whether the new manager will be reliable, fair, capable of making decisions, willing to listen, honest about what they know and do not know, and prepared to support the team when situations become difficult.

They also want to understand whether raising a concern will be safe, whether commitments will be remembered, whether standards will be applied consistently, and whether the manager can handle confidential or sensitive information responsibly.

New managers can unintentionally weaken trust by trying too hard to prove themselves.

They may introduce changes before understanding the team, make promises they cannot keep, avoid difficult conversations in order to remain liked, overstate certainty, become overly controlling, or treat every employee identically in the name of fairness.

Others become so cautious about using authority that the team experiences ambiguity rather than empowerment.

Trust develops through repeated evidence.

It grows when employees can reasonably predict how their manager will behave: commitments are followed through, decisions can be explained, mistakes are acknowledged, difficult issues are addressed, confidential information is protected, and employees are not punished for raising legitimate concerns.

Trust also grows when the manager demonstrates enough competence and judgment to provide direction without pretending to possess every answer.

Participants build a practical trust strategy for the early stages of management.

They examine the signals they are already sending, learn how to balance listening with leadership, strengthen fairness and decision transparency, create safer conditions for candor, and prepare for the moments that test trust most strongly — performance issues, unpopular decisions, mistakes, change, competing expectations, and broken commitments.

The objective is not to become everybody's favorite manager. It is to become a manager whose behavior gives people credible reasons to trust their leadership.
