About this session

Leadership power is often discussed as though it is either something good leaders should avoid or something ambitious leaders should accumulate. In reality, organizations need people with authority.

Somebody must make decisions, establish priorities, allocate resources, resolve competing demands, and take responsibility when the organization needs direction.

The more useful question is what power changes. A comment from a senior leader can become an instruction even when it was intended as a suggestion.

A preference can become an unofficial policy. Employees may agree more quickly, soften bad news, wait for the leader's opinion before sharing their own, or avoid challenging a decision because the personal consequences feel uncertain.

Leaders can therefore receive less honest information precisely when their authority increases.

Power can also change the leader's own behavior. Greater control over resources, decisions, and consequences can make it easier to act quickly and confidently, but it can also create blind spots.

Leaders may underestimate how much influence they have, overestimate the neutrality of their decisions, become less curious about perspectives they do not immediately understand, or mistake silence for agreement.

Participants examine leadership impact from both sides of the relationship. They learn to recognize the signals created by hierarchy, distinguish intention from impact, use authority proportionately, and make decision processes more transparent.

They explore how leaders distribute opportunity, respond to disagreement, handle bad news, share ownership, and repair situations where their own behavior has damaged trust.

The session then moves into practical leadership systems.

Participants build methods for obtaining unfiltered information, creating challenge before decisions are finalized, using accountability around their own power, and deciding where authority should remain with the leader and where it should move closer to the work.

The goal is not to make leadership powerless. It is to make power more conscious, more proportionate, and more useful — so authority enables clarity and action without reducing voice, judgment, ownership, or trust.
