About this session

Some of the most useful workplace learning happens between colleagues: someone explains how they approached a difficult task, another person asks the question that exposes an assumption, a team compares several ways of solving the same problem, or people review a piece of work and discover something none of them had noticed alone.

Collaborative learning turns those moments into a deliberate learning practice. It is more than putting people into a breakout room or asking them to discuss a topic.

Effective peer learning requires a clear purpose, useful structure, appropriate evidence, participation norms, and a way to connect what people discover with what they will do differently afterward.

Participants learn several ways to learn with others: explanation and teach-back, questioning, comparison of approaches, peer feedback, case discussion, observation, problem clinics, collaborative practice, and after-action review.

They also examine the limitations of peer learning. Groups can reinforce incorrect information, repeat dominant opinions, or confuse confidence with expertise if nobody checks the quality of what is being shared.

The longer formats help participants build collaborative learning into everyday work through learning circles, peer practice routines, communities of practice, and structured reflection around real work. The goal is not to create more meetings.

It is to make selected interactions genuinely useful for learning, application, and stronger capability.

What’s covered

Create the Conditions for Learning Together

Every length
  • Start with a shared learning purposeParticipants define what the group is trying to understand, practice, improve, or solve before deciding how people should collaborate.
  • Make participation useful — not performativeParticipants establish learning norms that make questions, uncertainty, alternative approaches, and appropriate mistakes discussable without requiring people to disclose personal information or demonstrate knowledge they do not have.
  • Use different experience as a learning resourceParticipants examine how different roles, experiences, and perspectives can reveal approaches or assumptions that one person working alone may miss.
  • Give the collaboration enough structureParticipants use clear questions, roles, time boundaries, outputs, and reflection prompts so peer learning produces more than an enjoyable conversation.

Learn Through Explanation, Questions & Peer Feedback

90 minutes and longer
  • Use explanation to reveal understandingParticipants practice explaining an idea, process, or approach to another person in their own words and discover where explanation exposes gaps, hidden assumptions, or unclear reasoning.
  • Ask questions that advance learningParticipants distinguish questions that clarify facts, test reasoning, explore alternatives, connect ideas, or prompt application.
  • Compare approaches — not just answersTwo people may reach the same outcome through different methods.
  • Give peer feedback that supports practiceParticipants use an agreed goal or criterion to describe what they observed, what effect it had, and what question or suggestion may help the next attempt.

Turn Real Work Into Shared Learning

3 hours and longer
  • Use peer problem clinicsParticipants bring an appropriately scoped work challenge or use a supplied case and separate understanding the problem from immediately prescribing solutions.
  • Learn through observation & shadowingParticipants identify bounded tasks where observing another person's approach can reveal decisions, cues, or techniques that are difficult to capture in written instructions.
  • Review experience through after-action learningParticipants use a concise review structure after a task, project, event, or simulation.
  • Practice together before the stakes are highParticipants use rehearsal, worked examples, case discussion, peer demonstrations, or simulations to practice a capability before applying it in a more consequential environment.

Build Collaborative Learning Into Everyday Work

Full day only
  • Create repeatable peer-learning routinesParticipants identify where short learning practices can fit naturally into existing work, such as case reviews, peer demonstrations, problem clinics, learning circles, or project retrospectives.
  • Build learning circles & communities with purposeParticipants define the shared domain, membership, cadence, activities, facilitation, and expected value of a learning circle or community of practice.
  • Capture only what is worth reusingCollaborative learning can create useful examples, questions, decisions, checklists, or practices.
  • Measure application — not just participationParticipants distinguish attendance and contribution from evidence that people understood, practiced, applied, or improved the capability being developed.
