About this session

Low mood and anxiety can affect work in very different ways. One person may struggle to start tasks or feel mentally slowed down; another may overthink, avoid decisions or remain constantly alert to what might go wrong. Some people experience both patterns at different times.

This session focuses on practical resilience when those experiences are affecting everyday working life.

Participants learn to recognize their own early signs, separate what they can influence from what needs support and reduce the pressure to function exactly as they do on their best days.

Participants then work with manageable action, worry and avoidance, realistic self-talk, recovery and support. The aim is not to diagnose or treat depression or anxiety in the workplace.

It is to give participants practical tools for navigating difficult periods while recognizing when professional, medical or organizational support may also be needed.

What’s covered

Recognize What Is Happening Earlier

Every length
  • Notice changes in capacityParticipants identify how difficult periods may first appear in everyday work through reduced concentration, slower thinking, low motivation, irritability, physical tension or feeling unusually overwhelmed.
  • Map your anxiety patternParticipants identify where anxiety tends to show up through worry, checking, reassurance-seeking, avoidance, overpreparing or difficulty making decisions.
  • Map your low-mood patternParticipants examine how lower mood can affect energy, initiation, connection, confidence and interest in activities that normally matter.
  • Distinguish a hard day from a patternParticipants look at duration, recurrence and impact rather than interpreting one difficult day as evidence that something is seriously wrong.

Protect Capacity and Keep Moving

90 minutes and longer
  • Build a reduced-capacity workdayParticipants identify what an effective day looks like when concentration or emotional capacity is lower than usual.
  • Make the next action smallerParticipants take tasks that feel difficult to start and reduce them to the next visible action.
  • Use action before motivation when helpfulParticipants explore how waiting to feel motivated can sometimes prolong inactivity.
  • Protect the basics without seeking perfectionParticipants identify simple supports that make difficult periods easier to navigate, such as regular meals, hydration, movement, daylight, rest or contact with another person.

Work With Worry, Thoughts and Avoidance

3 hours and longer
  • Separate facts from predictionsParticipants take a recurring anxious thought and identify what is directly known, what is being predicted and what remains uncertain.
  • Decide whether worry is producing actionParticipants examine whether repeated thinking is generating a useful decision or simply replaying the same possibilities.
  • Reduce avoidance graduallyParticipants identify tasks, conversations or situations they have begun avoiding because they feel difficult and choose an appropriately sized re-entry step.
  • Use realistic, not forced, self-talkParticipants practice replacing absolute conclusions such as 'I can't handle this' with language that acknowledges difficulty while leaving room for action.

Build Your Support and Resilience Plan

Full day only
  • Map different kinds of supportParticipants identify who can provide practical help, emotional support, workplace decisions or professional care and distinguish these functions clearly.
  • Ask for specific workplace supportParticipants practice identifying what would genuinely make work more manageable, such as clearer priorities, fewer competing deadlines, temporary flexibility or additional guidance.
  • Know when more support is neededParticipants identify signs that self-management may no longer be enough, including symptoms that persist, worsen or significantly affect sleep, functioning, safety or everyday life.
  • Create your early-action planParticipants combine early signs, reduced-capacity strategies, manageable actions, support routes and recovery into one personal plan.
