About this session

Change at work is rarely experienced as a purely rational process. Even when a change makes sense on paper, people may still feel uncertainty, frustration, loss of control, excitement, resistance or fatigue.

Those reactions can shape communication, decision-making and relationships just as much as the change itself.

This session helps participants apply emotional intelligence to periods of change.

They learn how to recognize their own emotional responses, understand why different people may react differently to the same situation and separate emotion from assumption so conversations remain clearer and more constructive.

Participants then practice communicating through uncertainty, responding to resistance without immediately labeling it as negativity and supporting colleagues while maintaining appropriate boundaries.

The final module focuses on adapting behavior, rebuilding trust and maintaining effectiveness as the new reality begins to settle.

What’s covered

Understand the Emotional Side of Change

Every length
  • Notice your first reaction to changeParticipants identify the emotions that tend to appear when priorities, roles or expectations shift, such as anxiety, frustration, excitement or loss of control.
  • Identify what feels threatened or lostParticipants consider what the change may affect, such as certainty, status, routine, competence, relationships or control.
  • Separate emotion from assumptionParticipants practice distinguishing 'I feel uncertain' from conclusions such as 'this will definitely go badly.' They allow the emotion to remain valid while testing whether the prediction attached to it is actually supported by available information.
  • Notice how emotion changes your behaviorParticipants identify whether uncertainty makes them withdraw, overcheck, resist, rush, seek reassurance or become more controlling.

Read Reactions More Accurately

90 minutes and longer
  • Do not treat resistance as one thingParticipants examine how resistance can come from different sources, including uncertainty, workload, disagreement, lack of trust, fear of losing competence or previous change experiences.
  • Use perspective without mind-readingParticipants consider what another person may be dealing with while clearly separating possibility from fact.
  • Listen for the concern under the reactionParticipants practice listening beyond the surface statement to identify whether the real issue is clarity, workload, fairness, capability, timing or trust.
  • Distinguish emotion from obstructionParticipants learn that frustration, anxiety or disagreement do not automatically mean somebody is blocking change.

Communicate Through Uncertainty

3 hours and longer
  • Be clear about what is known and unknownParticipants practice communicating confirmed information, open questions and next steps separately.
  • Acknowledge impact without forcing positivityParticipants practice recognizing that a change may be difficult, disruptive or unwelcome without immediately trying to reframe it as an opportunity.
  • Use consistent messages when details moveParticipants identify the core messages that should remain stable even when details change, such as purpose, decision ownership, what happens next and where questions can go.
  • Create space for questions and pushbackParticipants practice inviting questions, concerns and disagreement without treating every challenge as resistance.

Support Adaptation and Rebuild Trust

Full day only
  • Help people find their next point of controlParticipants identify where colleagues still have influence over priorities, learning, communication or day-to-day decisions even when the wider change is fixed.
  • Support without taking overParticipants practice supportive conversations that clarify what someone needs without becoming responsible for solving every emotional reaction.
  • Rebuild trust through visible follow-throughParticipants identify where change has damaged trust and focus on small actions that make reliability visible, such as keeping commitments, updating people when things shift and acknowledging when previous information was wrong.
  • Know when the change process needs to improveParticipants identify where distress or resistance is being driven by poor communication, unrealistic workload, repeated changes or lack of consultation.
