About this session

Energy and utilities ergonomics means fitting changing work to the people completing it, not coaching everyone to hold a perfect posture.

A task that is manageable at bench height can become demanding on a pole, in a trench, inside a cabinet, on a moving deck, or beside radiant plant equipment.

This session uses live task planning to examine work height, reach, force, duration, visibility, tools, PPE, access, footing, and recovery.

Participants compare options for vehicle setup, cabinet work, climbing access, plant valves, offshore decks, and control-room consoles while preserving electrical, fall, process, and confined-space safety requirements.

They leave knowing which adjustments any worker can make immediately and which layout, aid, and roster decisions require operational authority.

What your people take away

  • Assess work height, reach, force, duration, access, and footing
  • Adapt vehicle, cabinet, plant, offshore, and control-room setups
  • Select aids and staging that reduce unnecessary awkward work
  • Sequence tasks to create access, variation, and realistic recovery
  • Account for PPE without creating new hazards
  • Coordinate ergonomic controls across supervisors and crews

What’s covered

Understand Ergonomics Across Field, Plant and Vehicle Work

Every length
  • Work height, reach and access change the demandThe session begins by exploring how the same task can feel very different at floor level, waist height, overhead, inside a cabinet, in a trench or on elevated access.
  • Vehicle and control-room posturesThe group examines how long periods in vans, plant vehicles and control rooms can create sustained loading through the back, hips, neck and shoulders.
  • Low, high and restricted workAttendees explore the demands created by prolonged kneeling, crouching, overhead work and constrained access.
  • Ergonomics is more than postureParticipants consider why one "correct" posture cannot solve every field, plant or vehicle task.

Reduce Strain Through Better Setup and Support

90 minutes and longer
  • Bring tools and materials closerParticipants explore how repeated retrieval, awkward storage and distant tool placement can increase carrying, twisting and reaching across a shift.
  • Use supports and aids where they helpThe group examines how approved stands, supports, lifting devices, extension tools and other aids may reduce prolonged holding or awkward positioning.
  • Account for PPE in the physical loadAttendees consider how gloves, harnesses, respirators, arc-flash clothing, weather protection and other required PPE can affect heat, dexterity, reach and movement.
  • Keep individual adjustments within safe limitsParticipants explore which adjustments can be made personally and which require wider support.

Manage Fatigue Across Changing Work Environments

3 hours and longer
  • Static and repetitive demand both matterThe session examines how long vehicle journeys, control-room sitting, repeated climbing, cabinet work and plant tasks can all create fatigue in different ways.
  • Outages, callouts and long shiftsThe group explores how outage work, night shifts, emergency callouts and compressed schedules can increase physical demand while reducing recovery.
  • Use variation that actually changes the body loadAttendees consider whether moving between vehicle, plant, cabinet and control-room tasks genuinely changes the physical demand.
  • Protect recovery between demanding tasksParticipants explore the role of movement, hydration, food, sleep and short recovery opportunities in supporting musculoskeletal wellbeing.

Respond Early and Improve the Ergonomic Environment

Full day only
  • Notice functional change earlyParticipants explore changes such as reduced reach, grip fatigue, increasing difficulty with vehicle access, knee discomfort or slower fine-motor work.
  • Report the task, not just the painThe group considers how useful reporting can include the location, work height, tool, duration, access, PPE and effect on normal function.
  • Know when the workplace needs to changeAttendees explore recurring problems linked to vehicle layout, console design, access, equipment positioning or prolonged work at difficult heights.
  • Know when further support is neededThe session closes by considering persistent or worsening symptoms, acute injury or loss of safe function as reasons for further occupational-health or medical support.
