About this session

Musculoskeletal symptoms in healthcare rarely come from one simple cause.

Nurses, HCAs, clinicians, therapists, technicians, and support teams may move between bedside care, patient assistance, prolonged standing, charting, equipment movement, treatment tasks, ward walking, and physically demanding episodes within the same shift.

The current session already recognizes that pain and function can be influenced by load, repetition, duration, recovery, prior health, stress, and beliefs, but parts of the existing copy still contain manufacturing language such as "production periods," "tool vibration," and "prefabrication" that does not belong in a healthcare session.

This rewrite keeps the useful pain-literacy and early-response framework while grounding it properly in ward and clinic work.

Participants explore how bedside reach, patient-support tasks, treatment-space access, prolonged standing, equipment handling, charting, staffing pressure, recovery, and changing patient acuity can influence the neck, shoulders, back, hands, hips, knees, and feet.

The session also helps participants respond proportionately when symptoms change.

Rather than either avoiding all activity or pushing through everything, employees learn to consider function, recovery, task demand, and workplace conditions, while organizations gain a clearer view of where equipment, staffing, work design, layout, or workflow may be contributing to recurring musculoskeletal strain.

What your people take away

  • Understand why pain intensity does not always directly reflect tissue damage or physical capacity
  • Recognize how bedside care, patient support, standing, walking, charting, equipment, and changing workload shape musculoskeletal demand
  • Use proportionate responses to new or changing symptoms based on function, exposure, recovery, and context
  • Identify recurring workplace factors such as bed height, treatment-space access, equipment placement, staffing, or prolonged standing that may increase physical demand
  • Describe changes in pain, movement, grip, tolerance, and recovery clearly without needing to self-diagnose
  • Distinguish personal health strategies from workplace modification, clinical assessment, rehabilitation, and organizational controls

What’s covered

Make Sense of Pain & Changing Function

Every length
  • Pain is real, but it is not a simple damage meterPain is a genuine protective experience, but its intensity can be influenced by more than tissue condition alone.
  • Function provides important contextChanges in grip, movement tolerance, standing tolerance, dexterity, walking comfort, or recovery can provide useful information alongside pain intensity.
  • Avoidance and pushing through are both too simpleCompletely avoiding every uncomfortable movement can sometimes reduce confidence and tolerance, while pushing through worsening symptoms can also be unhelpful.
  • Clinical work changes from shift to shiftPatient acuity, workload, staffing, procedure mix, walking demands, and recovery opportunities can change significantly across different shifts.

Manage Clinical Physical Exposure

Every length
  • Bedside work can concentrate reach & back demandWorking around beds, chairs, lines, equipment, and patients may require repeated leaning, reaching, bending, and sustained positions.
  • Standing and walking create cumulative lower-body loadLong periods on the feet can influence foot, leg, hip, knee, and lower-back comfort, particularly when movement options or recovery are limited.
  • Charting adds a different type of exposureDocumentation may involve fixed desks, mobile carts, bedside screens, tablets, or temporary work surfaces.
  • Equipment position can either help or add workPoorly positioned monitors, carts, devices, supplies, and treatment equipment can create repeated reaching, turning, pushing, or repositioning.

Support Capacity, Recovery & Sustainable Function

90 minutes and longer
  • Physical capacity changes over timeTolerance for standing, walking, reaching, handling, and repeated tasks can vary with recent workload, sleep, health, physical activity, and recovery.
  • Movement can support musculoskeletal healthAppropriate movement and general activity may help some employees maintain confidence, comfort, and physical capacity.
  • Sleep and stress can change how physical work feelsPoor sleep, high stress, and repeated demanding shifts can influence fatigue, muscular tension, perceived effort, and symptom experience.
  • Recovery extends beyond one breakBetween-shift sleep, nutrition, general activity, rest, time away from work, and the amount of repeated occupational demand all influence recovery.

Recognize Patterns & Strengthen Sustainable Work Ability

Half day only
  • Notice when normal recovery is changingRecurring discomfort, increasing stiffness, reduced grip, altered sensation, poorer movement tolerance, or slower recovery after shifts can reveal changing patterns.
  • Report the work context clearlyUseful information may include the task, duration, bed height, patient-support demand, walking volume, equipment used, charting position, staffing pressure, and point in the shift.
  • Personal strategies have limitsHealthcare workers can influence movement, recovery, positioning, and early reporting, but they cannot personally redesign wards, procure equipment, increase staffing, or remove excessive workload.
  • Recurring workforce patterns can guide better preventionAggregated and de-identified workforce themes may reveal particular wards, tasks, equipment types, shift patterns, or workload periods associated with recurring musculoskeletal concerns.
