About this session
Hand-transmitted vibration is created when vibration from powered tools, machinery or workpieces passes into the hands and arms.
Drills, grinders, sanders, breakers, compactors, impact tools and other equipment can create very different exposure depending on their vibration characteristics, condition, task and time in use.
Participants learn why vibration risk is not determined simply by whether a tool 'feels powerful.' Exposure depends on the vibration reaching the hands and the duration of that exposure, while tool condition, consumables, grip or push force, material resistance, work method and cold conditions can influence the real task experience.
The session also introduces the health effects associated with repeated hand-arm vibration exposure. Tingling, numbness, reduced sensation, loss of dexterity and vibration-related circulation changes should not be normalized as part of tool work.
Participants learn how to report meaningful changes early without attempting to diagnose themselves or coworkers.
Longer programs move from awareness into prevention systems.
Participants examine tool selection, maintenance, exposure assessment, task planning, procurement, worker reporting and appropriate health surveillance so vibration risk is controlled through the work itself rather than left to individual technique or endurance.
What your people take away
- Understand how vibration magnitude and exposure duration combine to create hand-arm vibration risk
- Recognize how tool condition, consumables, grip force, work methods and temperature can influence exposure
- Recognize vibration-related changes in sensation, circulation, dexterity and hand function without self-diagnosing
- Apply the hierarchy of controls to reduce vibration at source and through better equipment and work design
- Understand the role and limits of trigger-time estimates, manufacturer information and formal exposure assessment
- Strengthen early reporting, health surveillance, maintenance and organizational follow-through

What’s covered
Understand How Vibration Exposure Builds
Every length- Connect vibration magnitude with exposure timeHand-arm vibration risk depends on both the vibration transmitted to the hands and how long that exposure continues.
- Separate tool-on time from the whole taskThe period when vibration is actually transmitted to the hands may differ from the total time allocated to a job.
- Understand why the real task mattersTool vibration data alone does not describe everything happening during use.
- Recognize the role of grip, force and coldWorkers may grip harder when a tool is poorly balanced, the workpiece is unstable, access is awkward, controls are difficult to operate or gloves reduce dexterity.
Recognize Vibration-Related Health Changes Early
90 minutes and longer- Understand what hand-arm vibration can affectRepeated hand-transmitted vibration can affect nerves and circulation in the hands and fingers and can reduce normal hand function over time.
- Notice changes in sensation and dexterityPersistent or recurring tingling, numbness, reduced sensation or difficulty with fine hand control deserves attention.
- Recognize circulation-related changesSome vibration-related conditions can affect circulation in the fingers, with episodes of unusual color change, numbness or discomfort that may become more noticeable in cold conditions.
- Report functional change before it becomes normalUseful reporting includes the tools and tasks involved, typical exposure pattern, timing of symptoms and any change in sensation, strength, dexterity or ability to control equipment safely.
Reduce Vibration at the Source
3 hours and longer- Ask whether the vibrating task can be removed or changedThe strongest control may be eliminating the need for a vibrating-tool task or replacing it with a lower-exposure process.
- Select lower-exposure tools for the real taskTool choice should consider whether the equipment is suitable for the material, work rate and operating environment as well as its vibration characteristics.
- Maintain tools, attachments and consumablesWorn bearings, damaged components, blunt cutting surfaces, unsuitable attachments and poorly maintained equipment can increase vibration, required force or task duration.
- Redesign the task to reduce force and exposureWorkpiece support, clamps, jigs, better access, appropriate handles, balanced tools and improved material positioning can reduce the force needed to control a vibrating tool and may also shorten task duration.
Manage Exposure, Surveillance and Follow-Through
Full day only- Assess exposure with appropriate informationParticipants learn how tool-use duration, vibration information and real working conditions contribute to exposure assessment.
- Use rotation only when it really changes the exposureMoving someone from one vibrating tool to another does not necessarily reduce hand-arm vibration exposure.
- Connect health surveillance with exposure controlWhere occupational exposure warrants health surveillance, appropriately designed surveillance can support early identification and follow-up of vibration-related health concerns.
- Learn from symptoms, equipment and recurring exposureRepeated symptom reports, high-use tools, recurring maintenance issues or jobs that depend heavily on vibrating equipment can reveal where stronger control is needed.
