Heat on Hot Production Floors

For manufacturing teams working near radiant machinery, in PPE or on hot production floors.

Topic
Workplace Safety, Ergonomics & Occupational Health

About this session

Manufacturing heat exposure changes with the weather, workstation, task, clothing, and production period. OSHA and NIOSH guidance emphasizes controlling the combined heat load rather than treating water as a complete solution.

This workshop helps workers and supervisors assess ambient plant heat, radiant heat, humidity, heavy physical work, and heat retained by PPE. Participants practice buddy checks, symptom reporting language, and emergency cooling scenarios.

They also map which controls any worker can use immediately and which scheduling, staffing, or acclimatization decisions require plant authority.

The program examines organizational responsibilities for forecasts, work-rest decisions, training, supervision, emergency access, and incident review.

It is designed for teams, supervisors, and safety leaders working across changing production floors, process areas, and partially enclosed plant environments.

What your people take away

  • Assess combined heat load across weather, work, clothing, and plant conditions
  • Identify when new or returning workers need closer supervision and lighter initial exposure
  • Apply water, rest, cooling, and buddy checks within the controls available on the plant floor
  • Recognize early heat illness and life-threatening emergency symptoms
  • Rehearse immediate cooling and emergency escalation without dangerous delays
  • Escalate scheduling and staffing concerns to the people who can authorize change

What’s covered

Read the Whole Heat Load

Every length
  • Understand heat beyond the ambient temperatureThe session begins by exploring how ambient plant heat, humidity, radiant heat from machinery, restricted airflow and reflected heat combine at the workstation.
  • Explore how physical work adds to heat strainThe group looks at carrying, pushing, prolonged standing, machine tending, assembly and sustained tool use as activities that generate additional body heat.
  • Consider PPE as part of the heat pictureAttention turns to respirators, gloves, coveralls, protective suits and other required PPE that may retain heat.
  • Understand acclimatization and changing toleranceAttendees examine why new workers, people returning after absence and teams exposed to sudden hotter conditions may need additional support while adapting.

Build Controls Teams Can Use

90 minutes and longer
  • Combine hydration, cooling and recoveryThe session explores water, cooler recovery areas and protected rest opportunities as connected parts of heat control.
  • Adapt workload and production conditionsThe group looks at how timing, task variation, exposure duration, pace and staffing can influence heat strain across a shift.
  • Use buddy checks to notice changeThe session examines observable changes such as unusual fatigue, dizziness, nausea, poor coordination, irritability or slower responses.
  • Test heat controls against the reality of the shiftThe module brings together workload, cooling, staffing, supplies, communication and first-aid arrangements across the working day.

Cool First and Escalate Fast

3 hours and longer
  • Recognize developing heat illnessThe session explores symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, cramps, weakness and unusual fatigue as signs that heat strain may be increasing.
  • Understand when the situation becomes an emergencyThe group looks at confusion, collapse, seizure, loss of consciousness and major behavior change as signs requiring urgent escalation.
  • Explore rapid cooling and first responseAttention turns to the principles of stopping exposure, moving someone to a cooler environment and beginning active cooling while appropriate support is arranged.
  • Prepare for response in complex plant environmentsAttendees consider how emergency response may be affected by mezzanines, restricted workstations, machinery, isolations and controlled access areas.

Strengthen Heat Management Across the Plant

Full day only
  • Understand who controls the wider conditionsThe final module explores how supervisors, production leaders, safety teams and management influence staffing, scheduling, workload, recovery arrangements and acclimatization.
  • Connect heat management with production planningThe session looks at how line pace, shutdowns, maintenance activity, product changes and production targets can affect exposure.
  • Learn from incidents and recurring problemsThe group examines how repeated symptoms, near misses, control failures and heat-related incidents can reveal wider weaknesses in the system.
  • Keep the heat plan responsiveThe session closes by treating heat management as an ongoing process that changes with weather, machinery, production demand and workforce conditions.
