About this session
Heat exposure in transportation is shaped by much more than the outdoor temperature.
Direct sun, humidity, radiant heat from asphalt and engines, enclosed trailers, vehicle cabin conditions, physical workload, clothing, shift length, and access to cooling can all influence how much heat the body has to manage.
The exposure can also change dramatically during one working day. A driver may move between an air-conditioned cab, a hot trailer, a sun-exposed yard, repeated loading activity, and roadside work while delays or traffic reduce opportunities to cool down and recover.
This session helps employees understand how heat affects the body, recognize early changes in physical and cognitive function, and use hydration, cooling, recovery, and pacing appropriately.
Participants also learn why water alone cannot compensate for excessive heat exposure and how to recognize when vehicle conditions, workload, scheduling, cooling access, or other workplace factors require wider action.
The 4- and 8-week versions extend the session into a workforce heat-readiness program.
Employees build knowledge and practical habits across real working conditions while Workbliss measures confidence, exposure patterns, cooling and recovery access, and recurring workplace barriers over time.
What your people take away
- Understand how weather, workload, clothing, vehicle conditions, and location combine to create heat exposure
- Recognize early physical and cognitive changes associated with excessive heat
- Use hydration, cooling, rest, and recovery as part of a coordinated heat-health approach
- Understand acclimatization and why heat tolerance can change after time away or changing conditions
- Know when symptoms require urgent escalation or emergency support
- Distinguish personal heat-management strategies from vehicle, scheduling, staffing, and workplace controls

What’s covered
Understand the Total Heat Load
Every length- Heat exposure is more than the weatherOutdoor temperature is only one part of the heat the body has to manage.
- Physical work generates additional heatLoading, unloading, repeated vehicle access, walking yards, and roadside activity generate metabolic heat inside the body.
- Clothing and work conditions change coolingUniforms, high-visibility clothing, protective layers, and limited airflow can influence how effectively the body releases heat.
- Heat tolerance changesNew workers, people returning after time away, and employees experiencing sudden hotter conditions may respond differently from colleagues already accustomed to the environment.
Hydrate, Cool & Recover Effectively
90 minutes and longer- Hydration supports the body, but it is not the whole solutionRegular fluid intake supports normal temperature regulation during hot work.
- Cooling changes the total heat loadShade, cooler spaces, appropriate airflow, air-conditioned environments, and other available cooling measures can help reduce accumulated heat.
- Rest needs to provide real recoveryA break may offer limited benefit if it occurs inside a very hot cab, trailer, or yard.
- Recovery continues after the shiftSleep, hydration, food, and time away from heat can influence how prepared the body feels for subsequent hot working periods.
Recognize When Heat Is Affecting Health
3 hours and longer- Notice early physical changesHeadache, unusual fatigue, dizziness, nausea, cramps, weakness, or feeling increasingly unwell can indicate that heat is affecting the body.
- Watch for changes in thinking and coordinationHeat can affect concentration, judgment, coordination, and behavior as well as physical comfort.
- People may not recognize their own deteriorationAs heat illness becomes more serious, an affected person may not accurately judge how unwell they are.
- Know when the situation becomes urgentConfusion, collapse, seizures, loss of consciousness, or major changes in mental status require urgent emergency action.
Build Heat Readiness Into the Working Environment
Full day only- Heat risk changes throughout the dayTemperature, sun exposure, workload, delays, route conditions, and access to cooling may all change during one shift.
- Some controls require organizational actionEmployees may be able to manage hydration, use available cooling, and report symptoms, but they do not control every aspect of exposure.
- New and returning workers may need additional supportHeat readiness should account for employees who are new to the work, returning after an absence, or encountering substantially hotter conditions.
- Recurring heat problems should inform preventionRepeated concerns linked to particular vehicles, locations, routes, shifts, or workload patterns can reveal wider heat-health issues.
