About this session

An automated external defibrillator, or AED, is designed to analyze the heart rhythm of someone in cardiac arrest and determine whether an electrical shock may help.

The device provides spoken or visual instructions and will not advise a shock unless it identifies an appropriate rhythm.

AEDs are designed so that members of the public can use them. However, practical training can reduce hesitation, help employees recognize when the device is needed and make it easier to coordinate AED use with CPR and the emergency call.

This active workplace experience gives participants repeated practice with AED training devices rather than live defibrillators.

They learn how to switch on the device, expose and prepare the chest, position the training pads, follow the prompts, keep everyone clear during analysis and shock delivery, and resume CPR immediately when instructed.

The training also addresses real workplace barriers. An AED may be located on another floor, locked behind reception, unfamiliar to employees or difficult to retrieve quickly.

Participants therefore practice the complete response: recognizing cardiac arrest, calling emergency services, starting CPR, sending someone for the AED and helping professional responders reach the scene.

Immediate CPR and early AED use can substantially improve survival from cardiac arrest.

This session provides practical AED training but does not automatically issue CPR/AED certification. Formal certification requires an approved course, an authorized instructor and completion of the applicable practical and assessment requirements.
