About this session

Workplaces bring people, shared spaces, equipment, air and work processes together — all of which can influence how infectious illnesses spread.

Different infections spread in different ways, so effective prevention starts with understanding the likely route of transmission rather than applying the same control to every situation.

Participants learn how hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, cleaning, appropriate disinfection, ventilation, shared-equipment practices and illness-management arrangements work together.

They also learn why more cleaning is not automatically better: products need to suit the surface and hazard, be used according to instructions and not create unnecessary chemical exposure.

The session moves beyond individual behavior.

Infection prevention also depends on access to handwashing, suitable facilities, ventilation, cleaning systems, staffing, work design, communication and arrangements that make it realistic for employees to respond appropriately when they are unwell.

What your people take away

  • Understand the main ways infectious illnesses can spread in workplace settings
  • Apply effective hand hygiene at the moments when it matters most
  • Distinguish routine cleaning from situations where disinfection is appropriate
  • Reduce respiratory exposure through ventilation, respiratory practices and better use of shared space
  • Recognize how shared equipment, facilities and work processes can create transmission opportunities
  • Build workplace systems that support infection prevention instead of relying on individual behavior alone

What’s covered

Understand How Infection Spreads at Work

Every length
  • Start with the route of transmissionDifferent infectious agents can spread through respiratory particles, contaminated hands and surfaces, direct contact, food or other exposure routes.
  • Look at contact, distance & durationExposure can be influenced by how closely people work, how long they share a space, the number of contacts involved and whether the environment allows infectious material to accumulate or transfer.
  • Recognize shared touchpoints without overfocusing on themDoor handles, shared tools, touchscreens, phones, controls, desks and other high-contact items can transfer contamination when hands repeatedly move between surfaces and the face.
  • Understand why workplace conditions matterCrowding, poor ventilation, inadequate handwashing access, shared equipment, inflexible work arrangements and weak cleaning systems can make infection prevention harder even when employees understand good hygiene.

Break Transmission Through Hygiene & Cleaning

90 minutes and longer
  • Use hand hygiene at the right momentsParticipants review when handwashing or an appropriate hand-hygiene method is particularly important, including after contamination, before eating, after restroom use and after activities that may transfer infectious material.
  • Clean before assuming disinfection is neededCleaning removes dirt, organic material and contamination from surfaces.
  • Use cleaning products as intendedCleaning and disinfecting products can themselves create chemical hazards if they are mixed, overused, poorly ventilated or applied without following the product instructions.
  • Control shared equipment & hygiene suppliesShared headsets, tools, keyboards, touchscreens, vehicles, devices and other equipment may need practical cleaning arrangements based on how they are used.

Reduce Respiratory Exposure in Shared Workplaces

3 hours and longer
  • Reduce the source when someone is illRespiratory infection prevention is stronger when people who are acutely unwell can follow the workplace's illness-reporting and work-arrangement process rather than feeling pressure to remain in close contact with coworkers.
  • Use ventilation as an exposure controlVentilation can reduce the accumulation of respiratory contaminants in shared indoor air.
  • Use respiratory etiquette & personal precautions appropriatelyCovering coughs and sneezes, disposing of tissues, cleaning hands afterward and following any workplace-specific respiratory precautions can reduce opportunities for spread.
  • Think about space, density & timeLong periods in crowded, poorly ventilated spaces can create different exposure conditions from brief contact in open or well-ventilated areas.

Build Infection Prevention Into the Work System

Full day only
  • Make hygiene easy to doHandwashing facilities, soap, drying methods, suitable hygiene products, waste disposal and cleaning supplies need to be available where people actually need them.
  • Use clear illness & exposure processesEmployees need to know how to report illness-related concerns, access workplace guidance and understand what is expected when they are unwell or when an infectious-disease situation affects the team.
  • Respond proportionately to clusters or increased illnessA sudden increase in similar illness may require review of work areas, ventilation, cleaning, shared equipment, staffing patterns or other exposure conditions.
  • Learn from recurring hygiene problemsRepeated shortages of supplies, persistent ventilation concerns, recurring contamination, overcrowded welfare areas or work patterns that make hygiene difficult are system issues rather than isolated employee failures.
