About this session

Leadership has traditionally contained a great deal of information work. Leaders gather updates, synthesize documents, prepare presentations, compare options, write messages, coordinate activity, interpret data, generate ideas, and recommend actions.

AI can already participate in many of those activities, and the boundary will continue to move. Simply being faster at producing the first draft is therefore a weak long-term definition of leadership value.

The more important question is what sits around the output. Who decided that this was the right problem to solve?

Which objectives should be optimized and which should be protected? What information is missing?

Which stakeholders will carry the consequences? What does the recommendation assume about people, incentives, history, trust, power, timing, or organizational capacity?

When several desirable outcomes conflict, who makes the trade-off? Who remains answerable if the decision causes harm or fails?

Human Leadership in the AI Era helps leaders move from task ownership toward value ownership. Participants map their work to distinguish production, analysis, coordination, judgment, relationship, authority, and accountability.

They examine where AI can increase leverage and where the leader's involvement materially changes the quality, legitimacy, or consequence of the outcome.

The session deliberately avoids the claim that humans possess a permanent list of capabilities that AI will never perform. Technology changes.

The more durable leadership question is whether a piece of work requires contextual judgment, accountable trade-offs, organizational legitimacy, trusted relationships, interpretation of ambiguous human signals, or authority that the organization has chosen to keep with a person.

Those are design and governance choices as much as capability questions.

Participants then move into human-AI work design. They identify where AI should generate, summarize, classify, model, recommend, coordinate, or automate and where human review should be meaningful rather than ceremonial.

They learn to challenge confident-looking outputs, trace important assumptions, ask what evidence would change the recommendation, and define when uncertainty or consequence warrants specialist or senior review.

The program also examines what happens to people when AI becomes part of everyday work. If employees simply receive machine-generated answers to execute, capability and ownership can become concentrated elsewhere.

If leaders treat AI output as neutral authority, employee challenge may become harder. If every employee uses AI differently without clear responsibility, accountability can become ambiguous.

Leaders therefore design decision rights, challenge routes, learning expectations, and human checkpoints alongside the technology.

Longer formats use real or simulated leadership work to build a Human-AI Leadership Operating System.

Participants redesign decisions, meetings, analysis, communication, delegation, review, and development around one principle: use AI aggressively where it creates legitimate leverage, while becoming more deliberate about the human leadership contribution that remains consequential.

What your people take away

  • Distinguish AI-enabled task execution from the leadership responsibilities of framing, judgment, trade-offs, authority, and consequence ownership
  • Map leadership work to identify where AI can automate or augment activity and where meaningful human involvement changes the outcome
  • Design clear decision rights and review thresholds for AI-supported recommendations rather than treating human oversight as a vague final check
  • Challenge AI-supported outputs through evidence, assumptions, uncertainty, stakeholder context, and alternative explanations
  • Preserve employee judgment, voice, learning, and ownership as more work becomes AI-assisted or automated
  • Build a Human-AI Leadership Operating System that makes distinctive human value, accountability, and AI leverage explicit

30 Minutes — Key Points: Redefine Where Human Leadership Creates Value

A focused 30-minute session on three key points from Redefine Where Human Leadership Creates Value: separate task value from leadership value, identify the human contribution that changes the outcome and own the problem before optimizing the answer.

  • Separate task value from leadership value
  • Identify the human contribution that changes the outcome
  • Own the problem before optimizing the answer

Covers 3 of 4 points in Redefine Where Human Leadership Creates Value.

60 minutes

60 Minutes — Find Your Distinctive Leadership Value in AI-Enabled Work

A focused leadership introduction centered on Module 1. Participants examine a typical leadership workflow containing AI-supported analysis, drafting, coordination, and recommendation and distinguish task production from the responsibilities that still require leadership ownership. They identify where context, trade-offs, authority, relationships, or consequence make the human contribution materially important. Participants leave with a Distinctive Human Value Map and one leadership responsibility to redesign.

  • Task value vs. leadership value
  • AI capability vs. leadership accountability
  • Leadership Work Decomposition Map
  • Distinctive Human Value Map
  • Problem framing
  • Context and trade-offs
  • Decision accountability
  • Live Q&A

90 minutes

90 Minutes — Redesign the Human-AI Leadership Boundary

An extended session covering Modules 1 and 2. Participants decompose leadership work, identify where AI can provide legitimate leverage, and decide where human judgment needs to remain substantive. They then design one AI-supported decision using explicit human review, challenge, exception, and accountability rules. Participants leave with a Human-AI Work Allocation Canvas and AI-Supported Decision Accountability Map.

  • Leadership value in AI-enabled work
  • Work decomposition
  • Automation vs. augmentation
  • AI autonomy levels

What’s covered

Redefine Where Human Leadership Creates Value

Every length
  • Separate task value from leadership valueA leader may currently spend substantial time drafting, summarizing, researching, reconciling information, creating options, or coordinating activity.
  • Identify the human contribution that changes the outcomeHuman involvement should not be preserved simply because the task used to be human.
  • Own the problem before optimizing the answerAI can help answer a badly framed question very efficiently.
  • Keep accountability with the person or body that holds authorityAI can generate a recommendation, prioritize an option, flag a risk, or execute an approved workflow.

Design the Human-AI Division of Labor

90 minutes and longer
  • Decide whether the work should be assisted, recommended, or automatedDifferent work requires different levels of AI autonomy.
  • Make human review meaningfulA human approval step adds little protection when the reviewer lacks the time, evidence, expertise, authority, or expectation to challenge the output.
  • Challenge outputs that sound more certain than the evidenceAI-supported analysis can be articulate, structured, and convincing even when important context, source quality, assumptions, or uncertainty need further examination.
  • Design for failure, exceptions, and escalationAn AI-enabled workflow should not be judged only by how it operates in the normal case.

Lead the Human System Around AI-Enabled Work

3 hours and longer
  • Preserve employee judgment — not just employee tasksA job can remain technically human while meaningful judgment has moved elsewhere.
  • Create a real route for challenging the systemEmployees may notice that a recommendation conflicts with customer reality, local context, professional judgment, or an emerging condition the data has not captured.
  • Lead the conversations AI cannot own for youAI can help a leader prepare for a difficult message, summarize information, generate wording, or model stakeholder reactions.
  • Protect voice, dignity, and context as systems scaleAI can aggregate large amounts of employee, customer, or operational information, but aggregation can reduce visibility of minority experiences, unusual cases, and contextual detail.

Build Distinctive Leadership Value Into the Operating System

Full day only
  • Move leaders toward higher-value judgmentAI leverage should create capacity for leadership work that previously received too little attention.
  • Make distinctive human value observableTerms such as empathy, creativity, judgment, and critical thinking are too broad to guide leadership redesign by themselves.
  • Review the Human-AI system — not just the model outputStrong outputs can still sit inside a weak operating system.
  • Keep redesigning as capabilities moveThe appropriate human-AI boundary will not remain fixed.
