About this session

Two people can enter the same negotiation with very different expectations about how the conversation should work. One may expect direct challenge while another places greater importance on relationship and indirect signaling.

One may feel comfortable negotiating visibly for personal benefit while another may approach the conversation through collective responsibilities, role expectations, or concern about how assertiveness will be interpreted.

These differences cannot be reduced to simple rules about national culture or gender.

Individuals vary enormously, identities intersect, organizational culture matters, and power, seniority, language, profession, incentives, personality, and previous experience can influence a negotiation as much as demographic characteristics.

Participants therefore learn to use cultural and gender awareness as a basis for better preparation and curiosity rather than prediction.

They examine communication norms, power, bias, participation, relationship expectations, value creation, and how the same behavior may be interpreted differently depending on who uses it.

The aim is to negotiate confidently while building a process in which different parties can contribute, challenge, advocate, and reach workable agreements without having to conform to one narrow negotiation style.

What your people take away

  • Recognize how culture, gender, power, role, and context can shape negotiation expectations without stereotyping individuals

  • Identify bias and double standards that can affect how negotiating behavior is interpreted
  • Create negotiation processes in which different parties can contribute and advocate effectively
  • Adapt communication while maintaining clarity, authenticity, and legitimate interests
  • Build agreements that reflect real stakeholder needs and remain workable across different contexts

What’s covered

Prepare Beyond Assumptions

Every length
  • Use culture & gender as lenses, not labelsCultural background and gender can influence experience, expectations, opportunities, and how behavior is interpreted, but they do not provide a script for how an individual will negotiate.
  • Map the full negotiation contextNegotiation behavior can be shaped by hierarchy, profession, organizational culture, language, role, authority, incentives, relationships, previous experience, and whether someone is negotiating for themselves or on behalf of others.
  • Understand interests before styleA behavior that looks passive, aggressive, indirect, rigid, or highly relational may make more sense once the person's interests, constraints, responsibilities, and risks are understood.
  • Examine power & negotiating freedomNot everyone enters a negotiation with the same authority, alternatives, information, credibility, organizational support, or freedom to take interpersonal risk.

Communicate Across Different Negotiation Norms

90 minutes and longer
  • Adapt directness without losing clarityPeople differ in how explicitly they state disagreement, decline requests, express dissatisfaction, or communicate what they want.
  • Read hierarchy, status & relationship expectationsIn some professional contexts, authority and status strongly influence who speaks, challenges, commits, or makes the final decision.
  • Check meaning instead of assuming itSilence, hesitation, enthusiasm, eye contact, rapid agreement, indirect language, or reluctance to challenge can be interpreted very differently across people and situations.
  • Negotiate across language differenceNegotiating in a second or additional language can affect speed, confidence, humor, nuance, interruption, and the ability to respond immediately to complex proposals.

Navigate Bias, Power & Participation

3 hours and longer
  • Notice double standardsThe same negotiating behavior can be interpreted differently depending on who displays it.
  • Don't confuse style with capabilityHighly visible, fast, assertive negotiation styles can dominate attention even when quieter or more relational approaches contain equally strong analysis or commercial judgment.
  • Design for meaningful participationMulti-party negotiations can reproduce hierarchy if the same people dominate speaking time, define the agenda, or decide which concerns deserve attention.
  • Use objective criteria without pretending they are neutralMarket data, precedent, policy, performance measures, benchmarks, and established norms can strengthen negotiation by providing external reference points, but the choice of criteria can itself favor particular interests.

Build Agreements That Work Across Difference

Full day only
  • Create value before dividing itDifferent priorities can become a source of value rather than simply an obstacle.
  • Make the agreement explicitDifferent assumptions about what was implied, agreed, provisional, or dependent on further approval can create problems after apparently successful negotiations.
  • Check impact, not just intentionA negotiation process can feel inclusive to the person leading it while another party experiences limited influence, pressure to conform, or an inability to raise concerns safely.
  • Learn from cross-difference negotiationsInclusive negotiation capability grows through experience when negotiators examine what surprised them rather than converting one interaction into a new stereotype.
