About this session

Patient handling is one of the most physically complex parts of healthcare work because the "load" is a person whose ability, pain, confidence, attachments, behavior, and participation can change from one moment to the next.

Nurses, HCAs, therapists, and care teams may reposition people in bed, support sitting and standing, transfer between beds, chairs, toilets, and carts, and work around pumps, lines, furniture, equipment, and restricted spaces.

The current session already uses TILE thinking — task, individual, load, and environment — and emphasizes assessing the person, space, aid, destination, and team before movement begins.

This session develops that foundation into a broader patient-handling and workforce-health program.

Participants examine how patient capability, bed height, destination readiness, space, equipment access, staffing, communication, workload, and repeated transfers influence both patient safety and staff physical demand.

The focus is on planning the movement before force is needed.

Teams learn to identify when conditions have changed, make better use of approved equipment, communicate clearly during shared transfers, and distinguish between improvements staff can make themselves and barriers requiring ward, equipment, staffing, facilities, or operational action.

What your people take away

  • Assess patient transfers using the person, task, environment, destination, and available equipment rather than relying on habit
  • Recognize how patient ability, pain, attachments, behavior, fatigue, and participation can change the physical demands of a transfer
  • Improve preparation through bed height, destination readiness, space, equipment positioning, and clear team communication
  • Understand how approved aids such as hoists, slide sheets, transfer devices, and adjustable beds can reduce avoidable manual effort
  • Recognize when changing conditions, missing equipment, inadequate space, or loss of communication mean the planned transfer needs to be reassessed
  • Distinguish staff-level preparation from equipment provision, ward layout, staffing, scheduling, and wider organizational controls

What’s covered

Understand the Complete Patient-Handling Task

Every length
  • The patient is not a fixed loadA patient's ability to participate can change with pain, weakness, cognition, fatigue, medication, anxiety, or clinical condition.
  • The environment changes the transferBedside clutter, bathroom size, floor conditions, equipment, furniture, lines, pumps, and limited maneuvering space can significantly change physical demand.
  • Destination readiness matters before movement startsA chair that is poorly positioned, a bed at the wrong height, or a bathroom route that is not clear can create unnecessary holding, repositioning, and additional movement.
  • Changing conditions require reassessmentIf patient ability, communication, equipment, space, or staffing changes during preparation or movement, the original plan may no longer be appropriate.

Use Equipment & Space to Reduce Physical Demand

Every length
  • Bed height changes the physical taskAdjustable bed height can influence how much staff need to bend, reach, support, or work away from the body during repositioning and bedside care.
  • Slide sheets can change repositioning demandApproved slide sheets and repositioning aids can reduce friction and physical effort when they are suitable, available, and used according to local practice.
  • Hoists change the transfer, not just the effortA suitable hoist can fundamentally alter how a transfer is completed, but successful use depends on equipment availability, patient suitability, space, sling access, and team preparation.
  • Space determines whether equipment can be used wellEven appropriate handling equipment becomes difficult to use when furniture, other devices, or restricted bathroom dimensions prevent safe positioning.

Coordinate Teams & Manage Repeated Handling

Half day only
  • Shared movement needs one clear planWhen several people assist with a transfer, differences in timing or expectation can create sudden and unnecessary force.
  • Anyone needs to be able to call stopLoss of communication, unexpected patient movement, equipment problems, or changing conditions may require the transfer to stop or be reassessed.
  • Repeated transfers build across the shiftRepositioning, toileting, bedside support, chair transfers, and equipment movement may occur repeatedly throughout a busy day.
  • High-acuity periods can reduce recoveryPatient deterioration, admissions, discharges, staffing pressure, or increased care dependency can rapidly increase the frequency and complexity of transfers.

Recognize Barriers & Strengthen Patient-Handling Systems

Half day only
  • Notice where the same handling problem keeps returningRepeated difficulty in one bathroom, bay, transfer type, equipment process, or shift may indicate a recurring system barrier rather than an isolated event.
  • Describe the handling conditions clearlyUseful information may include patient participation, transfer type, space, equipment availability, bed height, team availability, time pressure, and what changed.
  • Personal technique has clear limitsStaff can prepare the transfer, position equipment, communicate clearly, and use available aids, but they cannot personally create hoists, redesign bathrooms, repair beds, or increase staffing.
  • Recurring workforce patterns can guide better care designAggregated and de-identified workforce themes may reveal repeated issues associated with particular wards, transfer types, equipment shortages, spaces, or high-demand periods.
