About this session
Outdoor work can involve two related but different hazards: heat stress and ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
Temperature, humidity, direct sunlight, physical effort, protective clothing and limited access to shade or water can all affect how demanding the working environment becomes.
Sun exposure can also accumulate across ordinary working days, including during cooler or cloudy conditions. Outdoor workers can receive ultraviolet exposure from direct sunlight and reflected radiation from surfaces such as water, concrete, sand, metal or snow.
Long-term occupational exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation increases the risk of non-melanoma skin cancer, as CDC guidance on sun exposure for outdoor workers notes.
This session helps participants assess the complete outdoor-working environment, use layered protection and recognize early signs of heat-related illness or skin damage.
It also emphasizes that outdoor-work safety depends on appropriate planning, supervision, workload, shade, breaks and workplace controls—not personal resilience or sunscreen alone.
What your people take away
- Distinguish heat exposure from ultraviolet exposure and assess both during outdoor work
- Use clothing, shade, scheduling, hydration and sunscreen as complementary protections
- Recognize early signs that heat is affecting the body or work performance
- Prepare safer routines for physically demanding, mobile and changing outdoor tasks
- Know when symptoms, sunburn or concerning skin changes need professional attention

- Map the complete outdoor exposure
- Identify the highest-risk parts of the day
- Build a layered sun-protection routine
Covers 3 of 4 points in Strengthen Protection During the Next Outdoor Shift.
60 minutes
The 60-minute session focuses on immediate practical application. Participants assess a real outdoor-working day, identify the highest-risk periods and create a protection plan covering heat, sun, clothing, hydration and breaks.
- Module 1: Strengthen Protection During the Next Outdoor Shift
- Live Q&A
Covers 1 of 3 parts: Strengthen Protection During the Next Outdoor Shift.
90 minutes
The 90-minute session adds deeper exploration of workload, humidity, reflected ultraviolet radiation, protective clothing, sunscreen use and changing worksites. Participants compare controls and redesign a task or shift around the actual hazards present.
- Module 1: Strengthen Protection During the Next Outdoor Shift
- Module 2: Adapt Protection to the Work, Weather and Environment
- Live Q&A
Covers 2 of 3 parts: Strengthen Protection During the Next Outdoor Shift and Adapt Protection to the Work and Environment.
3 hours
Covers all 3 parts.
Full day
The full-day session combines practical protection with heat-illness recognition, acclimatization, incident response and skin-health awareness. Participants create a complete outdoor-work plan covering preparation, active work, recovery and escalation.

What’s covered
Strengthen Protection During the Next Outdoor Shift
Every length- Map the complete outdoor exposureParticipants choose a real shift or task and map when they will be outside, how physically demanding the work will be and where direct sun, radiant heat, humidity or reflected ultraviolet radiation may increase exposure.
- Identify the highest-risk parts of the dayParticipants compare different work periods rather than treating the entire shift as equally hazardous.
- Build a layered sun-protection routineParticipants combine shade, suitable clothing, head protection, eye protection and sunscreen instead of relying on one measure.
- Prepare water, breaks and cooling before work beginsParticipants identify where drinking water, shade and cooling will be available and how they will access them during the task.
Adapt Protection to the Work and Environment
90 minutes and longer- Match clothing with both protection and heat loadParticipants consider coverage, fabric, fit, visibility requirements, personal protective equipment and the amount of heat produced by the task.
- Use sunscreen as part of the systemParticipants review exposed areas that are easily missed, how much product is needed and when reapplication may be necessary because of sweating, rubbing or prolonged exposure.
- Account for reflection and changing conditionsParticipants identify surfaces and environments that can increase exposure, including water, pale ground, concrete, metal, glass and snow.
- Adjust workload, timing and task sequenceParticipants redesign a task by moving heavier activity to cooler or less exposed periods, rotating demanding duties, increasing recovery opportunities or using mechanical support where available.
Respond Early and Strengthen Workplace Practice
3 hours and longer- Recognize early heat-related changesParticipants learn to notice thirst, unusual fatigue, headache, dizziness, irritability, cramps, nausea, reduced concentration or declining coordination.
- Act when someone becomes unwellParticipants practice a workplace response covering stopping work, moving the person to a cooler place, active cooling, supervision and obtaining appropriate medical support.
- Plan for new, returning and less-acclimatized workersParticipants explore why someone starting outdoor work, returning after time away or moving into hotter conditions may need a gradual increase in exposure and workload.
- Check sunburn and skin changes earlyParticipants identify repeated sunburn, skin that is not healing normally or a new or changing mark as reasons to seek appropriate healthcare advice.
