About this session

Musculoskeletal symptoms in energy and utilities rarely have one simple cause.

Climbing, kneeling, overhead reach, heavy tools, vibration, PPE, confined access, and recovery gaps can all influence pain, while storms, outages, nights, and offshore hitches alter exposure from week to week.

This workshop gives field, plant, and control-room teams a practical, evidence-informed framework for responding without catastrophizing symptoms or dismissing them.

Participants examine pain as a protective experience, map demands such as pole and tower work, cabinet kneeling, valve and panel tasks, vibrating tools, deck and trench access, and prolonged control-room sitting, and select proportionate early actions.

They learn where optional preparation and gradual capacity building can help, and where task redesign, mechanical aids, staffing, sequencing, or clinical assessment are needed.

Clear boundaries protect confidentiality and keep diagnosis, rehabilitation, restrictions, and return-to-work decisions with appropriately qualified professionals.

What your people take away

  • Explain why pain intensity and tissue damage do not always match
  • Map climbing, kneeling, tool, and access exposures as weather, outages, and schedules change
  • Select proportionate early responses to new or changing symptoms
  • Report functional concerns clearly without diagnosing or minimizing them
  • Distinguish self-management, operational modification, and clinical assessment boundaries
  • Support suitable duties within documented rehabilitation and return-to-work guidance

What’s covered

Make Sense of Pain and Changing Symptoms

Every length
  • Pain is real, but it is not a simple damage meterThe session begins by exploring pain as a protective experience influenced by tissue signals, previous experience, sleep, stress, workload, temperature and perceived threat.
  • Short-term soreness versus concerning changeThe group considers the difference between expected short-term discomfort after unfamiliar climbing, kneeling or tool work and symptoms that are severe, worsening, persistent or associated with major changes in strength, sensation or function.
  • Avoid both complete avoidance and pushing throughParticipants explore why avoiding all movement can sometimes reduce confidence and capacity, while repeatedly pushing through significant symptoms can also create problems.
  • Describe what has changedAttendees consider how to describe symptoms through onset, location, behavior and functional impact.

Understand How Field and Plant Work Loads the Body

Every length
  • Climbing, kneeling and constrained accessParticipants explore how repeated climbing, ladder or tower access, prolonged kneeling, cabinet work and restricted spaces can load the knees, hips, back and shoulders.
  • Tool use, grip and vibrationThe group examines how heavy tools, sustained grip, repetitive controls and vibration can affect the hands, wrists, forearms and upper body.
  • Overhead work and static loadAttendees consider the demands created by valve work, panels, cable tasks, overhead reach and prolonged control-room sitting.
  • How outages, nights and weather change exposureParticipants examine how storms, outages, night work, offshore hitches and compressed schedules can increase repetition, reduce recovery and extend time spent in physically demanding positions.

Reduce Strain and Support Recovery

90 minutes and longer
  • Change the task before blaming the bodyThe session examines how access, working height, tools, mechanical aids and task sequencing influence musculoskeletal demand.
  • Use supports and aids where they helpThe group explores how kneeling supports, lifting devices, aerial aids, tool maintenance and team assistance can reduce unnecessary physical effort.
  • Use movement and recovery in proportionAttendees consider the role of optional warm-ups, brief movement, recovery and gradual capacity building.
  • Build recovery into demanding rostersParticipants explore how sleep, hydration, nutrition, recovery time and movement variety interact during long shifts, outage periods and consecutive workdays.

Respond Early and Support Safe Return to Work

Half day only
  • Report functional change earlyParticipants explore how early reporting can focus on what has changed and which work tasks are affected.
  • Know when professional support is neededThe group considers persistent or worsening symptoms, increasing weakness, spreading numbness, repeated dropping or significant loss of function as reasons to seek further assessment.
  • Support suitable work during recoveryAttendees consider how temporary changes to climbing, kneeling, tool use, overhead work or prolonged sitting may support continued work or return to work where appropriate.
  • Keep workplace and clinical roles clearThe session closes by distinguishing workplace support from clinical care.
