About this session
Healthcare air exposure is shaped by far more than one hazard or one job role.
Staff may encounter infectious aerosols, coughing patients, aerosol-generating procedures, cleaning and disinfection products, sterilization processes, medication aerosols, laboratory materials, maintenance dust, ventilation issues, or unexpected releases during the same working week.
The current session already correctly treats respiratory protection as one layer within a wider system of source control, isolation, ventilation, work practice, and exposure management.
This session helps participants understand how airborne exposure depends on what is generated, how it enters the air, who is nearby, how long exposure continues, how well the space is ventilated, and what controls are functioning.
Staff learn to distinguish different types of airborne hazards without assuming that every aerosol, odor, mist, or respiratory symptom means the same thing.
The focus is on practical exposure awareness, control effectiveness, respiratory PPE, and escalation.
Participants learn what they can observe and act on themselves, while recognizing when ventilation, product selection, equipment, respiratory-protection programs, occupational hygiene, infection prevention, facilities, or organizational action are required.
What your people take away
- Understand how infectious, chemical, laboratory, cleaning, pharmacy, and maintenance activities can affect clinical air exposure
- Recognize how source, route, proximity, duration, ventilation, and task combine to influence exposure
- Compare source control, isolation, ventilation, work-practice controls, and respiratory protection as different layers of prevention
- Understand why sight, smell, symptoms, or PPE presence alone cannot confirm whether air exposure is adequately controlled
- Distinguish respiratory PPE selection, fit testing, user checks, maintenance, and occupational-hygiene assessment
- Recognize when symptoms, control failure, ventilation problems, or an unexpected release require escalation

What’s covered
Understand Airborne Risk in Healthcare
Every length- Airborne exposure starts with the sourceClinical air exposure begins with what is being generated, whether that is infectious material, a chemical vapor, a mist, a medication aerosol, laboratory material, dust, smoke, or another airborne contaminant.
- Exposure depends on route, proximity & durationTwo people in the same room may experience very different exposure depending on where they are positioned, how long they remain, and what activity is taking place.
- Different airborne hazards require different controlsAn infectious aerosol, chemical vapor, cleaning mist, dust, or smoke does not automatically require the same protective response.
- Sight & smell are poor safety testsSome hazardous exposures are invisible and odorless, while some noticeable odors may not indicate harmful concentration.
Control the Source & Clinical Environment
90 minutes and longer- Source control should come before reliance on PPEReducing generation, containing the source, changing the product or process, isolating the task, or altering where work happens can reduce exposure before it reaches the worker.
- Ventilation needs to match the taskGeneral ventilation, local extraction, pressure-controlled environments, filtration, and specialized clinical spaces serve different purposes.
- Cleaning method can change airborne exposureSpraying, dilution, application technique, product selection, contact time, and waste handling can influence how much material becomes airborne.
- A control only works if it is functioningAn extraction system, isolation room, filter, or ventilation system cannot be assumed protective simply because it exists.
Use Respiratory Protection With the Right Expectations
3 hours and longer- Masks & respirators do different jobsDifferent products are designed for different purposes, hazards, and levels of protection.
- Fit testing & user checks are not the same thingFormal fit testing assesses whether a particular tight-fitting respirator model and size can achieve an adequate fit for the wearer, while a user seal check is performed when the respirator is put on.
- Other PPE can affect respirator performanceEyewear, face protection, headwear, facial hair, and other equipment may interfere with the seal or usability of tight-fitting respiratory protection.
- PPE burden should be managed without weakening protectionBreathing resistance, heat, communication difficulty, skin discomfort, and fatigue can increase during prolonged respiratory PPE use.
Recognize Control Failure & Strengthen Air-Health Prevention
Full day only- Recurring symptoms can reveal a patternPersistent cough, wheeze, chest tightness, breathlessness, throat or eye irritation, dizziness, or symptoms repeatedly linked with one task or location may provide useful exposure information.
- Unknown or changing air conditions require attentionVentilation alarms, unexpected aerosol generation, spills, unusual releases, visible dust, sudden symptoms, or uncertainty about a substance can indicate that normal controls may no longer be adequate.
- Personal PPE has limitsEmployees can use required PPE, follow procedures, and report concerns, but they cannot personally repair ventilation, select organization-wide products, run exposure monitoring, or redesign respiratory-protection programs.
- Recurring workforce patterns can guide better air controlAggregated and de-identified workforce themes may reveal particular rooms, procedures, products, ventilation systems, or work periods associated with recurring respiratory concerns.
