About this session
Inhalers deliver medicine directly into the airways, but different devices require different preparation and breathing techniques.
A pressurized inhaler, dry-powder inhaler, soft-mist device and spacer cannot all be used in exactly the same way, and small differences in timing, inhalation or device preparation can affect how much medicine reaches the lungs.
This session helps participants examine the inhaler they actually use, practice the device-specific sequence and identify common difficulties involving coordination, breathing speed, mouth position, dose loading, cleaning and checking remaining doses.
Participants also learn how to prepare for an inhaler-technique review with a pharmacist, nurse or other qualified professional.
The emphasis is on confidence, observation and shared decision-making.
Participants consider whether the device and routine remain comfortable, practical and suited to their needs, and prepare questions about technique support, alternative devices, side effects and treatment options.

What’s covered
Practice the Technique for Your Device
Every length- Identify the device in front of youParticipants determine whether they use a pressurized metered-dose inhaler, dry-powder inhaler, soft-mist device, breath-actuated inhaler or an inhaler with a spacer.
- Prepare the inhaler correctlyParticipants practice the preparation sequence required for their device, which may include removing the cap, checking the mouthpiece, shaking the inhaler or loading a dose.
- Match the breath to the deviceParticipants compare the slow, steady inhalation often required with a pressurized device with the stronger inhalation required by many dry-powder inhalers.
- Complete the dose sequenceParticipants practice what happens after inhalation, including holding the breath for as long as comfortably possible, waiting between doses where instructed and checking whether another dose is required.
Improve Technique and Everyday Use
90 minutes and longer- Use a spacer with greater confidenceParticipants explore how a spacer connects with a compatible pressurized inhaler and can make coordination easier while helping deliver medicine into the airways.
- Check the steps people commonly missParticipants review mouthpiece sealing, breathing out before inhaling, breathing speed, device position, dose loading and breath-holding.
- Care for the device and monitor supplyParticipants locate instructions covering cleaning, drying, storage, dose counters and replacement.
- Fit the inhaler into real working daysParticipants plan access during meetings, shifts, commuting, exercise and travel.
Connect Technique With Respiratory Medication Confidence
3 hours and longer- Clarify the role of each inhalerParticipants record the name, purpose, instructions and appearance of each respiratory medicine they use.
- Review whether the device and routine still work for youParticipants consider whether the inhaler is comfortable to use, easy to coordinate, practical to carry and suitable for their current routine.
- Prepare for a professional technique checkParticipants bring the inhaler and spacer to an appointment and demonstrate how they normally use them rather than only describing the process.
- Connect worsening symptoms with the action planParticipants identify where their personal respiratory or asthma action plan records usual treatment, worsening symptoms and routes for further support.
