About this session

A growth learning mindset does not mean believing that anyone can become excellent at anything simply by trying harder. Capability develops through a combination of effort, effective strategies, practice, feedback, support, opportunity, and time.

Participants examine the beliefs they hold about their own ability to learn and how those beliefs influence behavior when work becomes difficult.

They explore the difference between productive struggle and unproductive persistence, learn to treat mistakes as information rather than identity statements, and practice changing strategy when the current approach is not producing improvement.

The session also challenges the idea that people have one fixed 'learning style'. Instead, participants build greater flexibility in how they learn, using different approaches according to the skill, task, context, and evidence of what is helping.

The goal is not endless positivity — it is a more accurate and adaptive relationship with learning, challenge, and development.

What’s covered

Understand How Your Learning Mindset Works

Every length
  • Move beyond fixed vs. growth labelsPeople are rarely completely 'fixed mindset' or 'growth mindset'.
  • Notice the story you tell about abilityThoughts such as 'I'm just not good at this', 'Everyone else understands this faster', or 'If I were capable, this would be easier' can turn temporary difficulty into a permanent judgment.
  • Understand what actually builds capabilityImprovement depends on more than effort.
  • Build a flexible learning identityLabels such as 'I'm not technical', 'I'm bad at presenting', or 'I'm a visual learner' can unnecessarily narrow how someone approaches development.

Learn Through Challenge, Mistakes & Difficulty

90 minutes and longer
  • Use productive struggleSome difficulty strengthens learning because it requires retrieval, problem-solving, adjustment, and active thinking.
  • Treat mistakes as informationAn error becomes useful when it reveals what was misunderstood, overlooked, assumed, or not yet automatic.
  • Change strategy, not just effortRepeating an ineffective method with greater intensity is persistence, but it is not necessarily learning.
  • Use 'not yet' with evidenceThe phrase 'not yet' becomes meaningful only when it is connected to a path forward.

Use Feedback & Experimentation to Grow

3 hours and longer
  • Seek feedback that teachesFeedback is most useful when it identifies observable behavior, its effect, what was effective, and what could be changed next time.
  • Separate feedback from identityCritical feedback can feel like a judgment of the whole person when it is interpreted through a fixed view of competence.
  • Run small learning experimentsDevelopment becomes easier when learners can test different strategies rather than trying to find one perfect method in advance.
  • Track progress that is easy to missCapability can improve gradually enough that learners notice only how far they still have to go.

Build Growth Into Everyday Work

Full day only
  • Set learning goals, not just performance goalsPerformance goals focus on achieving an outcome; learning goals focus on developing the capability required to achieve better outcomes repeatedly.
  • Ask for help without outsourcing the learningSeeking support can accelerate development when it provides explanation, examples, feedback, challenge, or access to expertise.
  • Create stretch with supportGrowth happens when people work slightly beyond what is already comfortable while retaining enough guidance, resources, and feedback to learn safely.
  • Build a learning review rhythmGrowth mindset becomes practical when people regularly examine what they tried, what improved, what remains difficult, and what they should do differently next.
