About this session
Perfectionism is not simply caring about quality. Two employees may both set extremely high standards while having very different relationships with them.
One can adapt the standard when circumstances change, learn from mistakes and finish when the work is fit for purpose.
Another may repeatedly overcheck, delay completion, avoid unfamiliar tasks, struggle to delegate or interpret ordinary feedback as evidence that the work was not good enough.
Participants examine where high standards are helping and where rigid standards are creating unnecessary cost.
They identify recurring perfectionism cycles involving expectations, uncertainty, overpreparation, procrastination, checking, self-criticism and difficulty feeling satisfied with completed work.
The session then moves into practical recalibration.
Participants learn to match standards with stakes, define what 'done' means before beginning, time-box lower-risk work, experiment with earlier feedback and delegation, and evaluate performance across a broader range of evidence. The aim is not lower standards.
It is greater choice about where excellence matters, how much effort it deserves and when continued polishing has stopped adding meaningful value.
What your people take away
- Distinguish ambitious high standards from rigid perfectionistic working patterns
- Recognize overchecking, overpreparing, procrastination and avoidance as different expressions of the same underlying pattern
- Match quality and effort more deliberately to the stakes and purpose of the work
- Respond to mistakes and feedback as information rather than automatic evidence of inadequacy
- Use behavioral experiments to test whether feared consequences actually occur
- Build sustainable working habits that support quality, learning, delegation and professional growth

What’s covered
Understand When High Standards Become a Trap
Every length- Keep the high standards — loosen the rigidityWanting to produce excellent work is not inherently a problem.
- Recognize your perfectionism patternPerfectionistic behavior can appear as repeated checking, excessive preparation, endless revision, difficulty starting, reluctance to delegate, avoiding unfamiliar work or needing excessive certainty before acting.
- Count the real costAdditional effort is valuable while it materially improves the outcome.
- Notice where self-evaluation enters the workA piece of work can quietly become evidence about personal competence.
Interrupt the Perfectionism Cycle
90 minutes and longer- Challenge all-or-nothing qualityWork is rarely simply perfect or poor.
- Break the overchecking loopChecking reduces uncertainty temporarily, which can make another check feel reassuring even when it adds little value.
- Understand perfectionistic procrastinationSome tasks are delayed not because people do not care, but because beginning creates the possibility of producing something below the internal standard.
- Stop waiting to feel completely readyMore research, preparation or rehearsal can be useful until it stops materially changing readiness.
Calibrate Quality, Effort & Feedback
3 hours and longer- Match the standard to the stakesA regulatory submission, major client proposal, internal draft and routine email should not automatically receive the same quality threshold.
- Define 'done' before you startPerfectionistic work expands when the finishing line moves every time another possible improvement becomes visible.
- Get feedback earlierWaiting until work feels nearly perfect can result in substantial effort being invested before learning that the direction itself needs to change.
- Use 'good enough' precisely'Good enough' should not mean careless.
Build Sustainable Excellence & Growth
Full day only- Run behavioral experimentsPerfectionistic beliefs become easier to evaluate through experience than reassurance alone.
- Delegate without requiring a cloneDelegation becomes difficult when another person's different method is interpreted as lower quality simply because it is not the method the delegator would have chosen.
- Learn from feedback & mistakesGrowth requires enough psychological room to discover what does not yet work.
- Build a sustainable excellence systemParticipants combine quality calibration, definitions of done, time boundaries, feedback, experimentation, delegation and reflection into a repeatable approach.
