About this session
Returning to work after time away can feel surprisingly intense. Even when someone wants to come back, they may worry about how colleagues will respond, whether they can still perform at the same level, what has changed or whether the return itself will feel overwhelming.
This session focuses on the emotional experience of re-entry.
Participants identify the specific thoughts and situations driving anxiety, distinguish genuine practical concerns from predictions about what might happen and build a more realistic picture of what the first days and weeks back actually need to look like.
Participants then work on confidence, pacing, communication and gradual exposure to normal work demands.
The final module focuses on building a return-to-work support plan, knowing what to ask for and recognizing when additional professional or workplace support may be needed rather than expecting confidence to return instantly.

What’s covered
Understand What Is Driving the Anxiety
Every length- Name the specific fearParticipants identify what they are actually worried about, such as coping with workload, seeing colleagues, being judged, feeling out of practice or discovering that the role has changed.
- Separate facts from predictionsParticipants identify what they know about the return and what they are imagining may happen.
- Notice what anxiety makes you want to avoidParticipants identify whether anxiety is creating urges to delay the return, avoid certain people, overprepare or mentally rehearse every possible problem.
- Identify what is actually within your controlParticipants separate decisions they can influence, such as preparation, communication and pacing, from things they cannot fully control, such as other people's reactions.
Rebuild Confidence Gradually
90 minutes and longer- Separate being out of practice from being incapableParticipants identify tasks or routines that may initially feel less familiar and distinguish temporary rustiness from a loss of ability.
- Create a graded re-entryParticipants identify lower-pressure tasks, meetings or interactions that can help rebuild familiarity before moving into more demanding situations.
- Use previous capability as evidenceParticipants identify skills, achievements and difficult situations they have handled before and use that evidence to keep current anxiety in proportion.
- Let confidence lag behind actionParticipants practice taking proportionate next steps even when they do not yet feel completely confident.
Manage the First Weeks Back
3 hours and longer- Set realistic expectations for early re-entryParticipants identify what a successful first week or month should realistically look like and avoid expecting immediate peak performance.
- Protect energy and recoveryParticipants identify where returning itself creates extra cognitive, social or emotional demand and protect realistic recovery around the working day.
- Ask for context rather than pretending nothing changedParticipants practice asking what has changed in priorities, systems, people or expectations while they were away.
- Notice the urge to overcompensateParticipants identify pressure to work longer, volunteer for more or hide difficulty in order to prove commitment.
Build Your Return-to-Work Support Plan
Full day only- Identify what support would actually helpParticipants identify whether they need clearer priorities, temporary flexibility, more frequent check-ins, updated training, workload adjustment or another form of support.
- Decide what you want to shareParticipants consider what information is useful for managers or colleagues to understand while maintaining their own privacy.
- Build an early-warning and response planParticipants identify signs that the return is becoming harder to sustain, such as rising anxiety, exhaustion, withdrawal or difficulty functioning, and decide what action they want to take before the situation becomes more difficult.
- Know when more support is neededParticipants identify persistent or worsening anxiety, low mood, sleep disruption, panic or significant difficulty functioning that may justify professional, medical or occupational-health support.
