About this session

Joint problems are often blamed entirely on age or "wear and tear," but the picture is usually more complex.

Previous injuries, muscle strength, activity levels, repetitive work, body weight, training habits and how quickly physical demands change can all affect how joints feel and function.

Knees, hips, shoulders and the spine are particularly important for everyday movement, work and exercise. Staying active is generally part of protecting joint function, but the type, amount and progression of activity matter when discomfort or injury is already present.

This session explores joint health from a practical prevention perspective. It helps attendees understand common sources of joint stress, improve the way they manage strength and mobility, and recognize when persistent symptoms need more than self-management.

3 hours and longer
  • The effect of prolonged sittingLong periods at a desk, in vehicles or in static positions are explored in relation to stiffness and reduced movement variety.
  • Repetitive and manual workLifting, carrying, reaching, kneeling and repetitive upper-body tasks are examined as sources of accumulated physical demand.
  • Recovery between demandsSleep, rest and spacing of harder physical sessions are brought into the joint-health conversation.
  • Body weight in contextThe session examines how higher body weight can increase load on some joints, particularly the knees and hips, while making clear that weight is only one part of the picture.

Respond to Pain and Protect Long-Term Function

Full day only
  • Managing a flare-upThe final module explores what to do when a familiar joint becomes temporarily more uncomfortable.
