For safety teams and supervisors managing noise exposure and hearing protection.

About this session

Workplace noise can come from machinery, impact tools, compressed air, alarms, vehicles, production equipment, cutting, grinding, construction activity and many other sources.

A short loud event and a lower-level sound continuing for much longer create different exposure patterns, while several noisy tasks can add together across the working day.

Participants learn why noise risk is about both sound level and duration. They examine continuous, intermittent and impact noise, identify where exposure occurs and consider who else may be affected beyond the person operating the equipment.

The session also explains why noise that feels familiar or tolerable can still deserve assessment.

The course then moves upstream into prevention. Participants compare elimination, quieter processes, enclosure, isolation, damping, maintenance and work-design changes before considering hearing protection.

Longer programs connect source control with exposure assessment, hearing protection, worker reporting, hearing surveillance, procurement and verification that the control remains effective.

What your people take away

  • Understand how sound level and exposure duration combine to create occupational noise risk
  • Recognize continuous, intermittent and impact noise across tools, equipment and processes
  • Prioritize quieter processes, engineering controls and maintenance before relying on hearing protection
  • Understand how hearing-protection selection, fit, compatibility and condition affect real protection
  • Recognize when competent noise assessment, monitoring or hearing surveillance is needed
  • Use worker feedback, maintenance, procurement and surveillance findings to strengthen the workplace noise-control system

What’s covered

Understand How Noise Exposure Builds

Every length
  • Connect sound level with timeOccupational noise exposure depends on both how intense the sound is and how long someone is exposed.
  • Distinguish continuous, intermittent and impact noiseSome processes create steady noise, others switch on and off repeatedly, and others create short high-energy impacts or impulses.
  • Look beyond the person operating the equipmentNoise can affect nearby workers, maintenance teams, people passing through and employees in adjacent work areas.
  • Do not rely on familiarity or subjective loudnessPeople can become accustomed to noisy environments, and some damaging exposure may not feel dramatically loud after repeated experience.

Reduce Noise at the Source

90 minutes and longer
  • Eliminate or change the noisy process where possibleThe strongest noise control may be removing an unnecessary noisy task, using a different process, purchasing quieter equipment or carrying out high-noise work in a more controlled location.
  • Enclose, isolate or separate the sourceEnclosures, barriers, remote operation and physical separation can reduce the amount of sound reaching workers when they are suitable for the source and work process.
  • Use maintenance and damping to prevent unnecessary noiseLoose components, worn bearings, vibration, compressed-air leaks, damaged guards or unsuitable operating conditions can increase workplace noise.
  • Design work organization around the remaining exposureScheduling, access control, physical separation and reducing the number of people near noisy work can support stronger controls where exposure cannot be eliminated entirely.

Use Hearing Protection Intelligently

3 hours and longer
  • Match hearing protection to the exposure and taskEarplugs, earmuffs and other hearing-protection devices provide different levels of attenuation and may behave differently in real use.
  • Fit and wear determine real protectionA poorly inserted plug, displaced muff cushion or incompatible piece of PPE can substantially reduce the protection expected from the device.
  • Check compatibility with other PPE and the workSafety glasses, helmets, respirators, face protection, hair, clothing and communication equipment can affect how earmuffs or other protectors seal or sit.
  • Inspect, store and replace hearing protectionDamaged cushions, hardened components, contaminated reusable plugs or worn equipment can reduce comfort or protection.

Assess Exposure, Protect Hearing and Improve the System

Full day only
  • Know when competent noise assessment is neededWhere noise exposure cannot be understood confidently from existing information, competent assessment or measurement may be required.
  • Connect hearing surveillance with exposure controlWhere occupational exposure warrants hearing surveillance or audiometric testing, the program can support early identification and professional follow-up.
  • Report hearing changes and control failures earlyRinging in the ears, unusual muffled hearing, difficulty hearing speech or other hearing concerns should be reported through the appropriate workplace and healthcare pathway.
  • Use procurement and change management to prevent future exposureEquipment choice, layout, acoustic performance, maintenance access and process design can determine noise exposure for years after a purchasing decision is made.
