About this session
Osteoporosis weakens bones and increases the likelihood of fractures, particularly in the hip, wrist and spine. It can develop without obvious symptoms, meaning some people first discover it after a fracture or bone-density assessment.
Women can lose bone more rapidly for several years after menopause because declining estrogen reduces its protective effect on the skeleton.
Risk is also shaped by age, previous fractures, family history, low body weight, smoking, alcohol, certain medical conditions and medicines that affect bone health.
This session helps participants understand their own risk picture and strengthen the areas they can influence.
It combines resistance and weight-bearing activity, calcium, vitamin D, protein, balance, preventive assessment and fall reduction without suggesting that lifestyle alone can prevent or treat every case of osteoporosis.

What’s covered
Understand Bone Health and Your Personal Risk
Every length- Understand how bone changes over timeParticipants explore bone as living tissue that is continually broken down and rebuilt.
- Recognize why menopause mattersParticipants examine why reduced estrogen after menopause can accelerate bone loss for several years.
- Identify personal risk factorsParticipants review previous fractures, family history, early menopause, low body weight, smoking, alcohol, inactivity, medical conditions and medicines that may affect bone.
- Notice signs that deserve assessmentParticipants learn that osteoporosis may not cause symptoms before a fracture.
Build Strength, Mobility and Balance
90 minutes and longer- Use weight-bearing activity purposefullyParticipants explore activities that load the skeleton through standing and movement, including walking, stair climbing, dancing and appropriately selected impact exercise.
- Include resistance trainingParticipants examine how strength training supports bone, muscle and everyday function.
- Train balance and coordinationParticipants explore balance, posture and coordination as important parts of fracture prevention because stronger bones do not remove the risk created by falls.
- Progress safelyParticipants consider technique, gradual progression, pain, previous fractures and medical advice when choosing activity.
Support Bone Health Through Nutrition
3 hours and longer- Include calcium-rich foodsParticipants identify calcium sources including dairy foods, calcium-set tofu, fortified alternatives, some leafy vegetables and fish eaten with soft bones.
- Understand vitamin DParticipants learn that vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and supports bone health.
- Keep protein visibleParticipants explore how protein supports muscle maintenance, strength and the physical function needed to protect bones.
- Question unnecessary or excessive supplementsParticipants examine why more calcium or vitamin D is not automatically better.
Assess Risk, Prevent Falls and Plan Ahead
Full day only- Prepare for fracture-risk assessmentParticipants learn that fracture risk is assessed using age, menopause status, medical history, previous fractures and other clinical factors rather than symptoms alone.
- Understand bone-density testingParticipants receive a general introduction to DEXA scanning and why it may be recommended when fracture risk is elevated.
- Reduce fall riskParticipants review footwear, vision, lighting, clutter, stairs, medication effects, rushing and balance as parts of fall prevention.
- Create a long-term bone-health planParticipants bring together movement, nutrition, risk assessment, preventive care and signs requiring review.
