About this session

Higher education can involve much more than a tuition figure. Course fees, books, equipment, travel, housing, childcare, reduced working hours, and other study-related costs can change what a degree or qualification actually requires financially.

The useful starting point is therefore the full route — not simply the published tuition price.

This session helps participants map that full cost and then build the funding stack around it. They distinguish scholarships and grants from loans, identify where employer or public support may fit, and keep confirmed funding separate from applications that are still pending.

They also learn why timing matters: a reimbursement arriving after tuition is due does not solve the same cash-flow problem as funding available in advance.

Where borrowing remains part of the plan, participants learn what needs to be understood before accepting it: amount borrowed, interest, fees, repayment timing, conditions, and what happens if study changes.

The final stage turns the plan into a living system that can be reviewed when costs, work, funding, or enrollment change.

The aim is a more informed education-finance decision — not a promise of debt-free study, maximum financial aid, or a particular financial return from a degree.

  • Compare routes using the same financial frameParticipants compare education options using the same time period and cost categories.

Build the Funding Stack Before Borrowing

90 minutes and longer

  • Keep confirmed, pending & possible money separateParticipants record the status of each funding source and identify the evidence needed before it can be treated as secured.
  • Check conditions, deadlines & renewal requirementsParticipants identify whether a grant, scholarship, employer program, or public funding source depends on application timing, enrollment status, academic progress, approved courses, continued employment, evidence of payment, or another condition.
  • Calculate the funding gap without hiding the timing problemParticipants subtract confirmed non-repayable funding and genuinely available resources from the relevant education costs to identify the remaining gap.

Understand Student Borrowing Before You Commit

3 hours and longer
  • Know which type of borrowing you are looking atParticipants distinguish government or public student-finance borrowing from private or commercial education loans where those categories exist.
  • Read the cost beyond the amount borrowedParticipants identify interest, fees, rate type, disbursement timing, and how unpaid interest is treated under the applicable terms.
  • Understand when and how repayment beginsParticipants check whether repayment begins during study, after completion, after a stated grace period, or when another local condition is met.
  • Check what happens if the education plan changesParticipants identify the questions to ask before reducing enrollment, changing institutions, pausing study, or withdrawing.

Keep the Education Funding Plan Working

Full day only
  • Match funding to the dates the money is neededParticipants create a study-period timeline showing tuition or fee dates, housing or travel commitments, funding disbursements, employer reimbursements, and other relevant money flows.
  • Review funding that must be renewedParticipants identify grants, scholarships, employer assistance, public student finance, or other support that requires renewal, continued eligibility, new evidence, or a fresh application.
  • Adapt the plan when costs or circumstances changeParticipants test tuition increases, higher living costs, reduced work income, changed childcare, a delayed payment, or a lost funding source.
  • Build the handover into completion & repaymentParticipants prepare for the point at which study ends or funding arrangements change.
