About this session

When a serious financial disruption happens, people often need to make several decisions at once while the information is incomplete. Income may have stopped, an urgent cost may have appeared, support may still be pending, and normal financial routines may no longer fit.

This session gives employees a clear way to respond without assuming that a tighter budget or more borrowing will solve the problem.

Participants begin by building a Financial Emergency Playbook: the essential costs that need protecting, the resources and support routes worth checking, the information they would need, and the contacts that could matter.

They then work through the first days of a disruption, separating money available now from support that is still pending and building a temporary cash-flow view around immediate needs and high-consequence obligations.

The session continues through the period after the first shock.

Participants learn to prepare provider or creditor conversations, coordinate employer, public, insurance, and other support where relevant, keep track of applications and claims, and avoid rushed financial decisions that can create another problem.

The final stage moves from emergency mode into recovery: dealing with deferred costs, restoring financial capacity gradually, and updating the playbook using what was learned.

The aim is practical navigation rather than a promise that every emergency can be solved quickly. Employees can use the session materials privately and are never required to disclose the event, income, debts, family circumstances, health information, or support they are using.

What’s covered

Build Your Financial Emergency Playbook

Every length
  • Identify what changed & how urgent it isParticipants start by defining the disruption: income stopped or reduced, a major unplanned cost appeared, or both happened together.
  • Know what needs protecting firstParticipants identify immediate safety and basic-functioning costs such as housing, essential utilities, food, healthcare, required medicines, essential transport, and dependent care where relevant.
  • Map the resources & support routes that already existParticipants identify accessible cash, confirmed income, existing emergency savings, relevant employer support, public assistance, insurance or protection, household resources, and other legitimate support that may be available.
  • Prepare the information & contacts you may needParticipants build a simple reference list of the relevant employer, provider, insurer, public-support, housing, utility, financial, or independent-support contacts for the situation.

Stabilize the First Days of a Financial Shock

90 minutes and longer
  • Build a short-term cash-flow viewParticipants map confirmed money available now, reliable income expected soon, essential expenditure, and urgent emergency costs across the next days and weeks.
  • Reduce decisions to what actually needs action nowParticipants sort expenses and administrative tasks into immediate, communicate, temporarily pause where appropriate, and review later.
  • Activate support before assuming new borrowing is requiredParticipants identify which legitimate employer, public, insurance, provider, family, or community support routes are worth checking before creating a new repayment obligation.
  • Keep urgency from becoming a second financial problemParticipants recognize high-pressure loans, fake emergency grants, impersonation, advance-fee schemes, and promises of instant financial rescue as reasons to pause and verify.

Manage the Financial Disruption

3 hours and longer
  • Prepare early conversations about payments or supportParticipants prepare to explain what changed, which payment or service is affected, when action is required, and what information they can provide.
  • Coordinate support without counting it twiceParticipants track employer support, public assistance, insurance, reimbursements, family resources, provider arrangements, and other relevant financial help in one place.
  • Keep a decision & pending-action logParticipants record what was applied for, submitted, agreed, declined, or still awaiting a response and identify the next follow-up date.
  • Know when the situation needs specialist supportParticipants identify warning signs that general emergency education is no longer enough, including inability to meet essential needs, serious arrears, threatened loss of housing or essential services, court action, unsafe borrowing, insolvency concerns, disputed employment income, or another complex legal or financial issue.

Recover, Rebuild & Update the Playbook

Full day only
  • Move out of emergency mode in stagesParticipants identify which temporary changes can end as income or circumstances stabilize and which commitments need a slower transition.
  • Deal with the financial after-effectsParticipants map deferred bills, depleted savings, temporary payment arrangements, new debt, changed household costs, and goals that were paused during the disruption.
  • Rebuild the protection layers that were usedParticipants identify financial resources or protection layers that may need restoration, such as accessible reserves, documentation, updated employer-support information, or insurance and public-support contacts.
  • Use the experience to improve the next responseParticipants review what information was difficult to find, which support took time, where cash timing caused problems, and which decisions created unnecessary friction.
