About this session

A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. Brain tissue can be damaged quickly, which is why sudden neurological symptoms must be treated as a medical emergency.

Many people recognize facial drooping, arm weakness and speech difficulty, but stroke symptoms can also involve sudden vision problems, confusion, dizziness, loss of balance, poor coordination or a severe headache with no known cause.

The symptoms depend on which part of the brain is affected and may not look the same in every person.

The FAST test provides a simple starting point: check the person's face, ask them to raise both arms, listen to their speech and call emergency services immediately when any sign is present.

FAST captures some of the most common signs, but it does not cover every possible stroke symptom.

Symptoms may sometimes improve or disappear after a few minutes. This can still indicate a transient ischemic attack, sometimes called a warning stroke, and requires urgent medical assessment rather than a wait-and-see response.

This session helps participants recognize sudden changes, respond without attempting to diagnose the type of stroke and provide emergency services with useful information. It is an awareness session rather than a clinical assessment or first-aid qualification.
