About this session
Feedback can be useful and still be uncomfortable. A single comment can trigger embarrassment, defensiveness, frustration or the urge to explain everything immediately—especially when the feedback is unexpected, vague or delivered poorly.
Once that first reaction takes over, it becomes much harder to work out what the feedback is actually telling you.
This session helps participants slow that process down. They practice separating the content of feedback from its delivery, distinguishing specific observations from broad judgments and identifying what is evidence, interpretation or preference.
They also learn how to ask questions that turn vague criticism into information they can genuinely use.
The final part focuses on recovery and action. Participants decide what they will change, what they need to clarify and what they may reasonably choose not to accept.
They build a feedback-response process that supports accountability and growth while protecting confidence from turning one piece of feedback into a conclusion about their entire capability.

What’s covered
Receive Feedback Without Reacting Too Fast
Every length- Notice your first feedback responseParticipants identify what tends to happen when difficult feedback arrives.
- Create a pause before you answerParticipants practice short responses that create thinking space without appearing disengaged, such as acknowledging the feedback, taking a note or asking for a moment to process.
- Capture the message before interpreting itParticipants write down the actual words, examples or behaviors being discussed before deciding what the feedback means about them.
- Let the emotion settle without ignoring itParticipants identify the emotion created by the feedback and decide what support or recovery is useful before further analysis.
Find the Useful Signal
90 minutes and longer- Separate content from deliveryParticipants divide the experience into what was said and how it was said.
- Turn judgments into observable behaviorParticipants take vague comments such as “you need to be more strategic” or “you are not communicating well” and identify the specific behavior, situation or output the speaker may mean.
- Test the evidence and the sourceParticipants ask what examples support the feedback, whether a pattern exists and whether the person giving it has relevant visibility into the work.
- Sort act, clarify or parkParticipants place each part of the feedback into one of three categories.
Turn Feedback Into a Useful Conversation
3 hours and longer- Ask for a specific exampleParticipants practice asking for a recent example that shows the behavior or impact being discussed.
- Clarify the impact and expectationParticipants ask what effect the current behavior is having and what different behavior would look like in practice.
- Disagree without becoming defensiveParticipants rehearse situations where they accept part of the feedback but see another part differently.
- Close with a clear next stepParticipants finish the conversation by confirming what they will do, what remains unresolved and when progress will be reviewed.
Recover Confidence and Follow Through
Full day only- Keep one comment in proportionParticipants place the feedback alongside the wider evidence of their work rather than allowing one difficult conversation to become the entire picture.
- Turn valid feedback into one development targetParticipants choose the highest-value behavior to work on rather than reacting by trying to change everything at once.
- Get a second perspective when it is usefulParticipants identify when another informed perspective could test, clarify or contextualize difficult feedback.
- Return to the work and review progressParticipants create a practical re-entry step so feedback does not lead to prolonged avoidance or over-monitoring.
